UNIT 8 – POST WORLD WAR II GEORGIA SS8H10 – THE STUDENT WILL EVALUATE KEY POST WORLD WAR II DEVELOPMENTS IN GEORGIA FROM 1945 TO 1970. ANALYZE THE IMPACT OF THE TRANSFORMATION OF AGRICULTURE ON GEORGIA’S GROWTH. EXPLAIN HOW THE DEVELOPMENT OF ATLANTA, INCLUDING THE ROLES OF MAYORS WILLIAM HARTSFIELD, AND IVAN ALLEN JR., AND MAJOR LEAGUE SPORTS, CONTRIBUTED TO THE GROWTH OF GEORGIA. DISCUSS THE IMPACT OF ELLIS ARNALL

THE TRANSFORMATION OF GEORGIA AGRICULTURE AFTER WORLD WAR II THE G.I. BILL Laws helps returning Veterans back into society Georgia farm boys went to college to learn advanced farming techniques Alternative careers State was impacted through better farm production (although fewer farms) Women went to school (worthy of men workers)

INDUSTRY AND MANUFACTURING AFTER WORLD WAR II War time industries converted back to civilian industries Georgia becomes more industrial than agricultural (1st time ever) Small farmers move to urban areas in search of high $$ and better lifestyle Entire state New jobs New markets Transportation needs (Atlanta, Augusta, Macon, Columbus) Businesses came to Georgia Mild climate Low taxes Non-union workers Aviation (Delta, Lockheed) CDC (CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL)

AVIATION AND INDUSTRY Lockheed – Georgia’s largest employer CDC – Center for Disease Control Baby Boomers Cars were king! Fast food Polio was cut down Rock and Roll Credit Cards Television! Wartime innovation had been converted to Peace time innovation and entrepreneurship

SYNTHETIC FABRICS COTTON LOST SOME OF ITS HOLD ON AMERICA AS MAN MADE FIBERS ENTERED THE MARKET PLACE. NYLON, POLYESTER, AND OTHER FABRICS TOOK SOME STEAM OUT OF THE DEMAND FOR COTTON. GEORGIA’S MAJOR CARPET INDUSTRY BENEFITTED FROM THIS.

PINE FORESTS VAST PINE FORESTS THAT WERE ONCE CLEARED TO MAKE FARM LAND BECAME AN IMPORTANT NATURAL RESOURCE AGAIN FOR BUILDING MATERIALS TO HOUSE BABY BOOMERS AND SUPPLY GROWING INDUSTRIES.

CHANGES IN FARMS THEMSELVES WITH NEW MACHINERY AND FARMING TECHNIQUES, FARMS BECAME MORE PRODUCTIVE AND BIG BUSINESS. THE DAYS OF THE SMALL FARMER WERE AND CONTINUE TO BE FEWER AND FEWER. FARM MACHINERY BECAME A MAJOR INDUSTRY.

QUESTIONS WHICH CAUSE DO YOU THINK HAD THE GREATEST IMPACT ON MOVEMENT AWAY FROM THE FARMS? WHY? WHICH CAUSE DO YOU THINK HAD THE LEAST IMPACT ON THE MOVEMENT AWAY FROM THE FARMS? WHY? HOW DID THIS DECLINE IN FARMING IMPACT OTHER AREAS OF THE STATE?

THE DEVLOPMENT OF ATLANTA ATLANTA ROSE FROM THE ASHES OF THE CIVIL WAR LIKE THE FABLED PHOENIX. IT HAS ALWAYS OWED ITS SUCCESS TO THE RAILROAD AS A MAJOR HUB OF RAIL TRANSPORT AND THE “GATE CITY OF THE SOUTH”, BUT OTHER REASONS WOULD LEAD TO ITS DEVLOPMENT AS THE MAJOR CITY OF THE SOUTH.

WILLIAM HARTSFIELD SERVED AS ATLANTA’S MAYOR FOR 6 YEARS. LED ATLANTA TO BECOMING THE MAJOR AVIATION CENTER OF THE SOUTHEAST. WAS A MAJOR PLAYER IN ATLANTA’S LESS VIOLENT TRANSITION THROUGH THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. WAS THE FIRST TO HIRE BLACK POLICE OFFICERS. MADE ATLANTA ONE OF THE MORE RACIALLY DIVERSE CITIES IN AMERICA, AND ONE THAT HAS CARRIED THE REPUTATION OF BEING TO BUSY AND PRODUCTIVE TO HATE. INTEGRATION WENT FAIRLY SMOOTHLY IN ATLANTA DUE TO HIS COOPERATIVE EFFORTS WITH CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS. HIS NAME IS CARRIED IN THE NAME OF HARTSFIELD/JACKSON AIRPORT (A BLACK AND A WHITE MAN TOGETHER) AS A TESTIMONY OF HIS FIGHT FOR EQUAL RIGHTS IN ATLANTA.

IVAN ALLEN JR. BEST KNOWN FOR HIS “UPWARD ATLANTA MOVEMENT” WHICH INVESTED MONEY INTO THE GROWTH AND PROMOTION OF ATLANTA AS A BUSINESS CENTER FOR COMPANIES AND LED TO TREMENDOUS SUCCESS. ALSO KNOWN FOR HIS ROLE IN CIVIL RIGHTS AND THE SMOOTH TRANSITION OF ATLANTA INTO INTEGRATED SOCIETY

ELLIS ARNALL FIRST FOUR YEAR TERM GOVERNOR OF GEORGIA. GOT GEORGIA’S COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ACCREDITTED AGAIN AFTER TALMADGE HAD MESSED THINGS UP. TOOK THE PRISON SYSTEM OUT OF THE GOVERNOR’S CONTROL. ABOLISHED THE POLL TAX, AND ESTABLISHED A NEW CONSTITUTION IN 1945. GRANTED 18 YEAR OLDS THE RIGHT TO VOTE. MAKING GEORGIA THE FIRST IN THE NATION TO DO SO. HE WAS ALSO THE OUTGOING GOVERNOR AT A TIME OF ONE OF GEORGIA’S MOST CONTROVERSIAL ELECTIONS.
