Assistive Technology Overview

What is Assistive Technology? Assistive technology (AT) is equipment or software that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities. AT is assigned to individual special education students. AT is driven by IEP goals and objectives.

What are the legal mandates? Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): Educators are required to consider assistive technology for all children with IEPs and to provide assistive technology for students who require it for Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

Who determines which students require AT? The IEP team makes decisions regarding assistive technology based on a student’s IEP objectives. If assistance is needed, the AT specialist can consult, observe, or assist with an AT evaluation.

What services are provided by the AT department ? Student Consultation/Evaluation Technical Support for Device(s) / Software Staff Development Workshop Training on software/devices Assistance with ordering items.

How is AT documented in the IEP? Assistive technology needs to be considered at each IEP. It is documented on the AT Considerations Checklist as well as the Considerations tab. Remember to document the following: Whether or not AT is needed. If AT is required for home use, ESY, summer school or testing

What is the process for obtaining AT? IEP team completes AT Report parts I-III. IEP team proceeds with AT trials and documentation. IEP team holds IEP to complete AT Considerations. continued

IEP team completes AT Report parts IV & V. IEP team submits report to AT Specialist. AT Specialist will assign AT or order it through the SEIS/bookkeeper at the school. When AT arrives, AT specialist needs to be notified and will put item information in AT database.

Implement AT and keep data on its successfulness. Re-assess as needed. Let related personnel and the subsequent teacher know about the student’s AT. Follow up / Implementation

AT Forms Forms are available for download on the WCPS website:
