How Slavery Impacted the Beginning of the Civil War

A group of Northerners who wanted slavery to be abolished. Abolish means to get rid of.

A group of Southerners who wanted slavery to continue. Why?

Harriet Beecher Stowe This book was important because it turned so many people against slavery. 1852

John Brown 1859

Raid on Harper’s Ferry Harpers Valley, Virginia 1859 John Brown wanted to help slaves by giving them guns to rebel against their owners. He and a group of soldiers raided a gun storage facility in Harper’s Valley, Virginia. Other soldiers surrounded the area, but Brown refused to surrender. 1859

John Brown Two of John Brown's sons died at Harpers Valley. Brown was wounded.

John Brown was put on trial and hanged for his organization and involvement at Harper’s Ferry.
