Numeracy at Home How to help your child

Have an understanding of: Numeracy Mental computation = setting your child up for success in life Mental computation is fun Extra resources and activities I can use to help my child Learning Intention or What we hope to achieve today

C C The syllabus states that numeracy involves drawing on knowledge of particular contexts and circumstances in deciding when to use mathematics, choosing the mathematics to use and critically evaluating its use. To be numerate is to use mathematics effectively to meet the general demands of life at home and at work and for participation in community and civic life.. What is Numeracy?

C C htm

C C Based on the Numeracy Continuum which is founded on 20 years of national and international research. Linked to these programs: * Best Start, Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN), Count Me In Too (CMIT), Counting On and Taking Off With Numeracy (TOWN). Numeracy Recovery Program to start next year Numeracy at Oatlands Public School

What is the Numeracy continuum? The Numeracy continuum describes how students progress from using simple to increasingly sophisticated mental strategies in order to solve number and measurement problems.

EAS- Early Arithmetical Strategies

Where is the student now? How do I know? Where does the student need to go next? How will I support the student to move there? How will I know that the student has progressed? Supporting students’ numeracy learning

DOMINO TOWERS Focus: Addition Players: 2 What you need: a set of dominoes Turn all dominoes face down. Each player turns over a domino and works out the total. The person with the highest total gets to keep the domino and start making a tower. The player with the highest tower wins.

MAKE 10 Focus: Addition and Subtraction Players:2-4 What you need: A deck of cards 1(ace)-10 One player deals out 10 cards face up and places them in a row. The first player looks across the row for combinations of cards that add up to 10 and collects them. The aim is to collect as many cards as possible, so combinations that require more cards are better! After each turn, replace the removed cards with new ones from the pack. Play continues until there are no more cards or combinations of ten. The winner is the player with the most cards.

Kamikazee For 2- 4 players. Similarly to Yahtzee, students throw 5 dice trying to get the most of a particular number, they can have three attempted per go. When they have had their three throws, they total the same digits and write that score next to the number on the grid. Play alternates until all players have had 6 turns. Looking for students to be able to; uses skip count to find total uses inverse operation to solve problem, e.g. 5 x 2, I know 2 x 5 is 10 uses known facts to work out other problems, when I rolled two 3s that was 6 so if I now roll three 3s that will be 3 more which is 9
