Earthquakes. What are earthquakes? The word earthquake means exactly what it says. An earthquake is when the ground shakes as a result of energy being.
Rocks Move along Faults
 Earthquake = the shaking and trembling that results from movement of rock beneath Earth’s surface  Focus = area beneath Earth’s surface where rock.
An earthquake is a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden breaking and movement of large sections (tectonic plates) of the earth's rocky outermost.

What is an Earthquake? An earthquake is the sudden movement and shaking of the ground that occurs along a fault Earthquakes can be felt over a large area Earthquakes vary in their intensity Earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale

What Causes an Earthquake An earthquake is caused when the ground along a fault slips These are some of the different types of faults: Normal fault Reverse fault Strike-slip fault Thrust fault

How Does an Earthquake change the Earth’s Landforms? When an earthquake occurs, the ground moves – from as little as an inch, to many, many feet. This movement over time can cause mountains to form or rivers to change their course The highest mountains in world were formed along faults

How do Earthquakes Effect People? Earthquakes are often tragic because they can cause terrible damage to homes and buildings The cost and time to repair can be very extensive Earthquakes can disrupt our and water supply

Earthquake Fun Facts The largest earthquake in the world was in Chile on May 22, It measured 9.5 on the Richter scale. When an earthquake occurs under the ocean, it can cause a tsunami. Tsunamis are large, ocean waves which can cause extensive damage along the coastline. Earthquakes occur on the moon. They are called moonquakes.

Comprehension Questions What is an earthquake? What causes an earthquake? How does an earthquake change the earth? How do earthquakes effect people?
