A Day in the Life of a Swimmer By: Ashlyn B and Trevor D

In the morning I have to do dry land training. I run 1 mile and feel beads of sweat sticking to my face, this is an example of adhesion. Adhesion is water sticking to another substance. In this case the water is sticking to my face.

Water Cycle After I stretch, I am thirsty so I take a drink of water to keep hydrated. I realize that the water I’m drinking has come from the water cycle. The Water Cycle is the circulation of the earth’s water. condensation Evaporation precipitation

I look at the pool and see it is one big liquid bonded together. This bond is called hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen Bonding is the weak bond formed when H20 bond with another water molecule. Also when I see the water all sticking together this is cohesion. Cohesion is water sticking to more water. H20 Hydrogen bond

I jump in the pool and water splashes around me. Jumping in the pool l has caused me to break the surface tension. Surface tension is the bonds that make the pool appear to have a glass film over it.

As I am swimming, I look at the bottom of the pool. I see bright tiles covering the pool floor. To keep these tiles together, there is cement. I realize that there are tiny cracks in the cement. The tendency of the water to be drawn in these cracks is called Capillary Action.

After I finish my first part of my work out, I take a water break. I look over and see the Life Guard adding in more chlorine. The Life Guard is able to do this because water is the universal solvent. The water can dissolve almost any solute. In this case, the chlorine is the solute and water is the solvent. Water Chlorine Pool Water

As I start to swim again I wonder why water is attracted to itself. The reason is polarity. Polarity is the overall imbalance of the water molecule. Since the oxygen is larger than the two hydrogen's, the water molecule becomes negatively unbalanced. This causes the oxygen to be very attracted other positive atoms

FUN FACT! Did you know that an hour of vigorous swimming will burn up to 650 calories? It burns off more calories than walking or biking. FUN FACT! Did you know that swimming works all of your major muscles groups in your body? This is a sad but true fact =(. Over 50% of world-class swimmers suffer from shoulder pain! FUN FACT! Did you know that water’s buoyancy make swimming the ideal exercise for physical therapy and rehabilitation or for anyone seeking a low-impact exercise. Don’t know what buoyancy is well that’s ok. Buoyancy is the tendency or capacity to remain afloat in a liquid or rise in air or gas. Ow, my shoulder hurts! Wow, no wonder I'm so tired! No wonder I am so sore in the morning

FUN FACT! Did you know that an Olympic swimming pool has 660,000 gallons of water? 30 22,000 gallons=

I am about to get out of the water when I hear a scream. I look over and see a girl unconsciously sinking to the bottom of the pool. The Life Guard dives in after her, and rescued her. The reason she sank to the pool was because her lungs had filled with water. Waters density is 1g/ml. Because the girls density was greater than water, she sank. If she had air in her lungs she would have floated because airs is less than waters.

A bunch of people jumped in the pool to help the girl get out. Thank goodness waters specific heat is very high otherwise the pools temperature would have risen a lot. Specific heat is how much energy it takes to heat or cool something.

I got out of the pool and drank my recovery drink which was chocolate milk. As I walk in my house I take off my shoes and kick back to relax, after a very successful workout. Tomorrow I will do most of the same things but I will add a little bit of weight training.
