The rainforest is home to more than half of the world's animals. Colorful and unusual animals dwell in all four layers of the forest. All types of creatures are represented, from tiny insects to large mammals.

Mammals are one of the 6 main classes of animals. Animal classes are groups of animals that scientists consider to be alike in some important ways. Mammals are the animal class that people belong to.

The jaguar is the largest feline on the American continent, with jaguars also being the third biggest cat in the world behind the African lion and the Asian tiger. Jaguars have the strongest bite force of all the cats and like other pantherines they can roar. (click on me to hear what I sound like)

Gorillas are the biggest of the worlds primates and live in the forests in select parts of Africa. The gorilla population is sadly much lower than it used to be meaning that gorillas are an endangered species. (click on me to hear what I sound like)

Tropical rainforests are home to many kinds of birds, including parrots, hornbills, toucans, and raptors like eagles, hawks, and vultures.

The toucan is a medium-sized bird native to the rain forests of central and South America and the Caribbean. There are more than 40 different species of toucan that inhabit the South American jungles today.

The parrot is a medium sized group of birds, with the parrot being best known for it's extremely brightly colored feathers, and the ability of some parrot species to talk, as these species of parrots are able to mimic sounds made by other animals such as humans. Tropical rainforests are home to a huge diversity of amphibians and arthropods (frogs, salamanders, insects, and spiders). These are found in virtually all rainforest habitats, ranging from the high canopy to streams and creeks.

Poison dart frogs are a group of frogs that are native to the tropical jungles of Central and South America. Poison dart frogs excrete toxins through their skins, and the brightly colored bodies of poison dart frogs warn potential predators not to eat them.

Blue Morpho butterfly is one of the largest butterflies in the rainforest. They are very easy to spot even amongst the jungle canopy thanks to their very bright and shiny light blue wings.

Reptiles and their kin have inhabited our planet for millions of years. The reptile family has both some of the largest, and smallest of living vertebrates on earth. All reptiles are cold-blooded, an unfair term at best since the animals body temperatures often exceed that of any living mammal.

The Gaboon Viper is located in the tropical rainforests and other moist areas of East and West Central Africa. The Gaboon Viper feeds on small mammals (particularly rodents), birds and amphibians such as frogs. The Gaboon is a venomous snake and its bite can be very harmful and possibly fatal to humans.

The caiman is a large aquatic reptile found in the swamps and tropical rivers that cover Central and South America. Although the caimans have much narrower bodies, they are most closely related to alligators and crocodiles.
