pH

What is pH? pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is pH of a solution is compared to the pH scale

pH Scale: Ranges from 0 to 14, a pH of less than 7 is acidic, a pH greater than 7 is basic, a pH of 7 is neutral

pH Scale pH 0 = Battery Acid pH 1 = Hydrochloric Acid produced by the stomach pH 2 = Lemon Juice, Vinegar pH 3 = Grapefruit, Orange Juice, Soda pH 4 = Tomato Juice, Acid Rain pH 5 = Black Coffee pH 6 = Urine, Saliva pH 7 = “Pure” Water

pH 8 = Sea Water pH 9 = Baking Soda pH 10 = Milk of Magnesia pH 11 = Ammonia pH 12 = Soapy Water pH 13 = Oven Cleaner pH 14 = Liquid Drain Cleaner

Testing pH To test pH we can use two tests Litmus paper pH paper Litmus Paper: turns red if the solution is acidic and turns blue if the solution is basic pH Paper: changes to a specific colour for the pH of that solution

Litmus Paper
