Is it alive?.
The characteristics of living organisms. All living things are made of cells. have DNA obtain and use energy. Excrete wastes grow and develop. reproduce.

So what is a living thing? Anything that possesses all of the characteristics of life is called an organism. The characteristics of life are as follows:

CHARACTERISTICS OF ALL LIVING THINGS #1 CHARACTERISTICS OF ALL LIVING THINGS Add characterististics to your list that you do not have! Made of cells (can be unicellular or multicellular) Contain DNA (control cell activities) Grow…increase # of cells; get bigger Develop…changes an individ goes thru during life Respond to stimuli (R: way we react; S: causes rxn) Need energy (to do work; carry out life processes) Reproduce themselves (to continue the species) Have a life span (eventually die) Adapt to their environment (change to survive) Evolve (change in a species) Maintain homeostasis (state of balance)

OTHER IMP’T VOCAB # 2 ORGANISM…a complete living thing UNICELLULAR…made of one cell MULTICELLUAR…made of many cells #4 SPECIES…group of organisms that look similar and can reproduce to produce fertile offspring # 8 HOMEOSTASIS…a steady balance METABOLISM…all activities that an organism carries out to keep it alive

# 3: DNA is found in every cell and provides all the information needed to control the organism’s life processes # 5: REPRODUCTION is necessary for a species to survive…if species do not make more of themselves…their species will die out # 9: all living things need energy to carry out the processes of life (metabolism)…organisms obtain energy from the sun or food

# 6 GROWTH VS. DEVELOPMENT # 7 STIMULUS VS. RESPONSE GROWTH… increase in # of cells increase in size DEVELOPMENT… Changes an individual goes through during life cycle physical emotional physiological STIMULUS… Causes a reaction EX: loud noise, temperature RESPONSE… The way an organism reacts EX: jumps, shivers

# 10 organisms must adapt in order to survive as the environment changes ADAPTATION change to be better suited in their environment EX: white fur to blend in the arctic regions Webbed feet for swimming EVOLUTION Changes in a species over Long periods of time

Do these have anything in common? Such as…?

ANIMALS

PLANTS

FUNGI

PROTISTS

BACTERIA
