“Living or Not?”

A living thing is called an organism. “What do we call a living thing?” A living thing is called an organism.

1. All living things are made of cells. Elodea Plant Cells Onion Plant Cell Cheek Cell A cell is the basic unit of structure and function within a living thing.

Amoeba A living thing made of only one cell is called unicellular.

Elodea Plant A living thing made of many cells is called multi-cellular.

2. All living things are made of similar macromolecules and chemicals. Water Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Vitamins Minerals

3. All living things use and require energy. Producers Consumers

Carbon – Oxygen Cycle

4. All living things undergo growth and develop.

5. All living things respond to their surroundings. Stimulus – cause Response – effect or reaction to cause

6. All living things can reproduce.

Basic Needs Living things have basic needs. Energy Water Living space Homeostasis

Homeostasis is maintaining a stable internal environment within an organism despite changes in the surroundings.

Living things are classified as biotic Living things are classified as biotic. Non-living things are classified as abiotic.

How do you decide if something is living or non-living?

Biology is a process of inquiry Scientific processes Biology is a process of inquiry

Important Vocabulary Equilibrium adhesion Osmosis high heat capacity Diffusion surface tension Capillary action hypertonic Polar hypotonic Universal solvent isotonic Solute Cohesion

Your Quiz Question 1 Which of the following is the best example of a scientific model? a. a group of zoo monkeys to represent behavior in a natural environment b. a computer simulation of Earth’s climate changes c.an x-ray showing multiple fractures in a bone d. a salt-water aquarium in the home of a fish enthusiast

Question 2 Write and example of a hypothesis? One sentence.

Question 3 What is the difference between an independent variable and a dependent variable? Explain and provide an example.

Question 4 Word Meanings What is the meaning of this word Homeostasis? What does a- and an- mean?

Question 5 Honors How do experiments show cause–and-effect relationships? Explain and provide an example.
