Return Initiation Departure By: Kameron Armour 4th Period - Rustin Return Initiation Departure A Hero’s Journey

The Lightning Thief The Odyssey

Assistance From a Supernatural Aid The Odyssey

Supernatural Aid Athena Throughout his epic journey Odysseus will be assisted by Athena, goddess of wisdom, courage, and inspiration, who will help him keep focus of what matters most, “ the story of the Odysseus begins with the goddess Athena’s appealing to Zeus to help Odysseus , who has been wandering for ten years on the seas to find his way home to his family on Ithaca” (Book 1, Homer 1204). In his epic journey Odysseus is a hero who captures the interest of the gods and goddesses through his epic trials and adventures lost at sea. He requires the assistance of a supernatural aid, Athena, to guide him in his epic journey. Athena

The Road of Trials

The Road of Trials During his 18 year journey Odysseus faces many obstacles that try to prevent him from accomplishing seeing his family and home again. Odysseus faces a sequence of trials that transforms him from an epic hero into a tragic hero, “Rough years lie between you and your homecoming, alone and old, the one survivor, all companions lost’…”(Book 12, 106-108).

Refusal of the Return

Refusal of the Return Even after all that he had been through, Odysseus’ life still hasn’t returned back to normal. It seems like fate is still denying him of a life of freedom, happiness, and internal peace. Odysseus had to battle for what was rightfully his, and lost several men in the process. Now when he returned home he had to prove his worth and teach the suitors a lesson about not tampering with his home or family, “so much for that. Your clean cut-game is over. Now watch me hit a target that no man has hit before, if I can make this shot. Help me, Apollo”(Book 22, 4-6).

Call of Adventure The Lightning Thief

Call of Adventure Percy received the call of adventure when he was forcefully inducted into the Greek world of myth and monsters. When he was rushed to Camp Half-Blood by his mother because he was being attacked by a menacing minotaur, his epic adventures began. He barley escaped with his life, but his mother’s life was claimed by Hades (Death), “the monster closed his fist around my mother’s neck, and she dissolved before my eyes’…”(Riordan 53). When Percy passed out unconscious right after he made it to the entrance of the camp, he was now in good hands, “the last thing I remember is collapsing…and the stern faces of a familiar-looking bearded man and a pretty girl’…”(Riordan 56).

The Road of Trials

The Road of Trials Percy received a quest, a true quest, that would test his heroic qualities and make him prove his worth, “ you’ll meet worse, Percy. Far worse, before you’re done”, several trials are woven within his epic journey (Riordan 134). When Percy receives information from an Oracle at the camp, it is predetermined that his fate is already set in stone, “you shall go west, and face the god who has turned…you shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned…and you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end’”(Riordan 141). A road of trials lie in the distance for Percy to complete.

Master of Two Worlds

Master of Two Worlds When Percy returned home alive and accomplished what seemed like an impossible task, he was known around Camp Half-Blood as an epic hero, “we were the first to return alive to Half-Blood Hill since Luke…’”(Riordan 354). A legend was born when his epic quest came to an end. He was the master of two worlds, the mortal world and the world of the gods, and he was thrown parties and ceremonies in his honor since his return. Percy was rewarded at one of the ceremonies an end-of-summer bead which,”…commemorates the first son of the Sea God at this camp, and the quest he undertook into the darkest part of the Underworld to stop a war’”(Riordan 359)!
