CT Scans Travis Williamson 3

History Dr. Alessandro Vallebona  proposed a method to represent a single slice of the body on the radiographic film, know as Tomography. The first public CT was invented by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield in the UK, using x-rays. The most modern design that would create multi-dementional pictures was made by Robert S. Ledley at Georgetown University.

T X-ray tube D X-ray detectors X X-ray beam R Gantry rotation

Common Uses -Can quickly identify injuries to all organs in the Thoracic Cavity in cases of emergency or trauma. -Create a “map” for biopsy procedures -Plan for and see the results of surgery -Detect broken or fractured bones.

Procedure X Ray Beams and X Ray Detectors rotate around your body, measuring the amount of radiation you absorb. At the same time, the table the patient is on moves back and forth through the machine, creating spiral pattern for the rays. This is called Helical CT Advanced computers take the data, and based on radiation absorption at key points and angles, create a digital image. The more advanced this technology becomes, the thinner “slices” it can capture.

CT vs MRI CT Scans are preferred for extreme or dire situations due to the speed at they perform. CT Scans can’t show ligaments very well or the spinal cord due to density issues CT is preferred for abdomen x rays and diagnosing tumors and cancers. MRI isn’t useful at all for visualizing the lungs or chest cavity. The biggest advantage of an MRI is that MRIs use no radiations.

Risk Factor The cancer risk thought to be associated with the radiation is very minor. One or two MRIs in a lifetime will not have any ill effect on a person. Prolonged exposure or multiple exposures greatly heighten the risk.
