Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 Created by: Sabrina Edmondson Adapted from BBC online

Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 Multiplying by 10 When you multiply a number by 10 you add a 0 to the end of the number. The number becomes 10 times bigger.

Example 263 x 10 = 2630 You can see that a zero is added to the end of the number. Units move to left, and a zero is added to the ones place like this: THHTO This Becomes this

Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 Multiplying by 100 When you multiply a number by 100 you add two 0s to the end of the number. The number becomes 100 times bigger.

Example 263 x 100 = 26,300 TTHTHHTO This Becomes this

Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 Multiplying by 1,000 When you multiply a number by 1,000 you add two 0’s to the end of the number. The number becomes 1,000 times bigger.

Example 263 x 1,000 = 263,000 HTH TTHTHHTO This Becomes this
