You may want to copy and paste the text or chart from one of the models. If you want to include the Book Recommendation forms, then you will need to upload the forms and link to them. Action Plans Write Virtual Book Clubs under Key Actions Discuss How you will use the pages just created to provide students 24/7 opportunities to read, write, and talk about books?

Discuss Will you start with a target group or grade? Who on the faculty can you partner with? Do you want to combine these virtual discussions with f2f discussions? How do you plan to advertise the virtual books clubs? What additional resources do you need to be successful? What do you see as the primary benefit of hosting virtual book clubs?

Action Plans Fill out the other columns in the Action Plan

Widgets A widget is simply embeddable code that performs an action when placed in your wiki or web page We are going to add at least two widgets that students will find indispensible as they conduct research We are going to embed widgets so that students have quick access to Visual Thesaurus and the BrainPop featured video

Adding Widgets Click on Pages and Files Find the page called Sidebar and click on it. The Sidebar appears on every page so we are going to embed the Visual Thesaurus widget in the Sidebar. Click on the Edit button Click on the Edit button Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click once. Then, click on Insert Plugins and select HTML/Javascript.

Don’t Worry! You do not need to know HTML or Javascript; if you can copy and paste, then, you can insert a widget Copy and paste the following code into the box : Copy and paste the following code into the box : – – *This can be found on the wiki for today’s professional study-Don’t worry, you can cut and paste! wiki

Continued… Check Allow JavaScript and other potentially unsafe code (learn more); click Next > Next > Insert Plugin. learn morelearn more Save the page to see the Visual Thesaurus widget.

BrainPop Widget Click on Page and Files Click on the New > Create a Page Name the page BrainPop Resources Place it in the Research folder and click Create page Click on the new page and then, the Edit tab Write a brief description about how and when students want to use BrainPop. If you are a bit frazzled, you can do this next step later !

Continued… Click on Insert Plugins > HTML/Javascript Open a new page and go to _request/ _request/ _request/ Complete the information and then, open their Copy the code that BrainPop sent to your and insert it in the Enter Code here box Check Allow JavaScript and other potentially unsafe code (learn more); click Next > Next > Insert Plugin learn morelearn more Save the page to see the featured BrainPop movie

Discussion Talk about how embedding the widgets will help students be more independent as they read, write, and talk about their research. Consider the following questions: –Will you start using the widgets with a target group or grade? –Who on the faculty can you partner with? –Do you want to add widgets to the other databases or include the passwords for home use? –How do you plan to advertise the widgets? –What additional resources do you need to be successful? –What do you see as the primary benefit of using widgets and encouraging students to use the databases?

Action Plans Enter your key action(s) for encouraging use of the databases into your Action Plan

Voice Thread Some people already use it, but LIS would like to see increased VoiceThread usage to increase opportunities for reading, writing, and talking about books and research. Learn Voice Thread or work on wikis, but include Voice Thread on the Action Plan
