The History of IT 1.01 Understand information technologies and knowledge pathways.

Early Devices Joseph Marie Jacquard, in 1801, developed an automatic pattern loom, that used punched holes in paper cards to create a design. In 1927, future president, Herbert Hoover, appeared on the first demonstration of television in the U.S. In 1935, International Business Machines (IBM) introduced the first electric typewriter.

The First Computers In 1939, the first electronic computer using binary arithmetic was invented. It was called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) after its inventors. In 1943, the first vacuum-tube programmable logic calculator, Colossus, was built in Britain to break Nazi codes. The first computer, UNIVAC 1, designed for U.S. business in 1951, used magnetic tape storage instead of punched cards.

Programming Languages IBM developed FORTRAN, a commercially available programming language that used mathematical formulas to express computations. In 1964, the BASIC computer programming language was developed for use by students.

Computers for Public Use In 1975, Paul Allen and Bill Gates developed BASIC for the Altair 8800 home computer. Microsoft was born. In 1977, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak release the Apple IIe desktop personal computer.

Storage Devices The floppy disk was invented in 1970 with a storage capacity of 2 MB. The first CD-ROM drive was sold, providing significantly greater storage capacity than a floppy drive.

Internet Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web in In 1992: the number of hosts broke 1,000,000.
