Grade Weights 60% Competencies (sign skills and tests) 10% Culture Assignments 10% Deaf Community Connections 10% Employability Skills 10% Video Labs

PORTFOLIO Students will be creating a portfolio in ASL 1 and adding to it in ASL 2. Supplies needed for this class: –1 ½ view binder –Page protector sheets –Dividers This will be an Employability Skills grade

CULTURAL ASSIGNMENTS There will be 2-4 culture assignments with each unit. Formal assignments are expected to be typed and must follow a specific format. These assignments will go in the ASL portfolio. These assignments are given during a Wednesday culture lesson and are due the following Tuesday.

COMPETENCY BASED GRADES for Formal Assessments We have a number of video sign projects in this course. 60% of the grade is competency based. Either a student meets standards or he doesnt. If a student attends class regularly, signs with all the in class activities and does all his work; I can guarantee he will meet standards. So what if he doesnt meet standards? Then grade will be an INC and he can re-do the project as many times as needed until he can meet standards. I allow retakes on written test only after all assignments/labs for that specific unit and the test review are completely done.

HOW TO DRESS FOR VP Students are expected to dress up as a sign interpreter for their presentations. Students are encouraged to dress as if they were going to a sign language interpreter interview or board certification. At minimum they are expected to dress appropriately for a high school sign presentation. In class we have discussed and have shown examples of how to dress for both interview level and high school presentation.

Appropriate Interpreter Dress: Appropriate Interpreter Dress: Professional dress up - Solid contrasting color to skin tone. No baggy sleeves or other distracting dress. No hats, hair in face, excessive jewelry. Appropriate dress for an interpreter skills evaluation for certification or job interview. Formal dress, tie, dress shoes etc.) Solid contrasting color. Nothing distracting. Hands and face clearly seen. Semi formal. Dressed up for a H.S. sign language presentation. Solid contrasting color. Nothing distracting. Hands and face clearly seen. Semi formal. Dark dress jeans or nice Khakis okay. Clean shoes. NO shorts, no flip flops, no tears in pants, etc. (wrinkled dress clothes that were wadded up in backpack is not dressed up.)

Video Labs There are a number of video labs (workbook).n Especially in ASL 1. Students will self grade right away in class. This will allow for each student to see how much they know and what they need to practice more. These labs are entered in the grade book as Yes they did it or No they did not. They are not docked if they did not get all the answers right. This is a learning tool. Students are expected to make up missed labs right away since they are very important for developing visual understanding.

Deaf Community Connections Throughout the semester there will be various events and activities outside of the classroom for students to participate in. The goal is to get them involved with our local Deaf community. This is a semester long project. Students need to accumulate 100 points per semester. I have already handed out the list of options and the point value for each. It can also be found on-line on the ASL class website.
