 In one year there are over 1000 sightings of UFOs called into the police.  Most of the people who call in UFO sightings are either drunk or want to be on TV and are faking it.  Most of the other sightings of a UFO are flashes of light up in the sky which are satellites.  The rest of the sightings are usually weather balloons.

 Most people think that they are seeing a UFO when it is really just a weather balloon.  A weather balloon is sent up into the troposphere to measure wind speed humidity, and atmosphere pressure. The information is then sent back to a weather station.  A weather balloon is inflated helium to a volume of 25.5 cubic feet.

 Satellites are most commonly mistaken for a UFO.  Most people think that a satellite is a UFO because a satellite flashes and looks distinctive.  A satellite flashes because it has a solar panel to attract energy from the sun and the light reflects off the sun making a flash.  Some satellites have a flashing light to show it is a satellite or is still working.

 A lighting rod is a still metal rod at the top of a building.  If there was a severe thunderstorm and lighting struck a building then there would be a high chance of a fire in the building and damage to electronics.  If lighting strikes the lighting rod then the rod sends the lighting down a wire into the ground hurting no one and there are no fires.

 A wind sock does not look like a sock. It is shaped more like a sideways cone.  A wind sock is used to see the direction and the speed of the wind.  A wind sock is attached to a long pole with string and has a big hole in the front. If it is windy then the wind sock will fly horizontally and in the direction of the wind.
