INTRODUCTION In India, approximately 500,000 people are affected by tuberculosis 1000 patients are dieing each day DOTS is a comprehensive strategy for systematic, diagnosis and effective treatment of tuberculosis The tuberculosis rates tend to be highest, more in remote areas and communities

OBJECTIVES Survey of tubercular patients in Bangalore Rural District undergone for DOTS therapy. To study the effectiveness of DOTS therapy and its importance.

METHODOLOGY It is a retrospective study The data was collected from the four different TB Units of Bangalore Rural District during January 2003 to August 2006

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Survey of tubercular patients in Bangalore Rural District containing 4 different TB units of population 51,92,049 47,819 patients were diagnosed as TB patients 8,620 patients were treated under DOTS therapy 3954 patients were sputum positive

Cat – I 3755 cases were new sputum positive 944 cases were sputum negative seriously ill Cat – II 614 cases were AFT Deficiency 290 cases were relapse 286 cases were complete treatment failure Cat – III 1830 cases were sputum –ve not seriously ill 1041 cases were extra pulmonary not seriously ill

CONCLUSION The study revealed that the DOTS therapy effective in Bangalore rural district and the outcome is better.
