English 3 Wk 30

Wed. 3/26 Bellringer ***worth 10 points*** In complete sentences, reflect on the final essay you just wrote for the power unit. Guiding questions for reflection: How do you think you did? What was challenging? What do you now know how to do really well? How did the power journal help you prepare for the essay?

Take notes in the “test prep” section of your binder. Strategy for the ACT English Test 1.Identify the issue of the underlined portion. 2.Predict the correct answer. 3.Look at the answer choices and eliminate incorrect choices. 4.Plug-in the remaining possible answers to select the most correct choice. Don’t do these steps if you are 100% sure of the correct answer. Just bubble in the correct letter on your answer sheet.

Small Group Assignment-6 minutes Work in groups of 3 with people next to you. Don’t move or get out of your seat. One person records the groups’ work on one sheet of paper for the entire group. 1.Identify the issue. Discuss your individual answers in the bellringer to come to a consensus about the issue. 2.Predict the answer (What change would make the sentence grammatically correct?). 3.Eliminate the incorrect choices. Explain why they are incorrect. 4.Plug-in possible answers-select the correct answer

ACT English Practice. 1.Of the seven candidates, only John, Bill, and Jim was past office holders. A.NO CHANGE B.Jim, was C.Jim were D.Jim is 2.Of the seven candidates, John, Bill, or Jim are likely to win. A.NO CHANGE B.Jim, are C.Jim were D.Jim is

Rules for s/v agreement with compound subjects 1. two or more parts joined by and  plural Example His daughter and his son want him to move to Florida. Remember: plural verbs don’t have an “s” on the end

However… if the two joined parts refer to a single person or thing, use a singular verb. Example the same person The restaurant's chef and owner makes good fajitas. Example Fish and chips is a popular dish in England. both are served together as 1 dish

2.With or or nor the verb agrees with the part of the subject nearer to it. Examples Her sister or her parents plan to visit her next week. singular plural Neither her parents nor her sister drives a station wagon. singular plural

Homework due Thursday 3/27 Complete both sides of the worksheet.
