There are 3 theories… Arrhenius (most common) Bronsted-Lowry Lewis

Arrhenius Bronsted-Lowry Lewis Theory includes more chemical reactions.

Arrhenius (most common): an acid gives H + and a base gives OH - Hydrochloric acid H + + Cl - Sodium hydroxide Na + + OH -

But NH 3 in water is basic.. NH 3 + H 2 O  NH OH - base acid proton acceptor proton donor

Bronsted-Lowry: an acid is a proton (H + ) donor and a base is a proton acceptor
