If...Then? Today I can construct function tables with if...then statements using simple equations.

Essential Questions What is mathematical reasoning? How does it relate to if...then statements? What is an algebraic function? What are the rules of computation?

For starters.... Think...what operations do we use in math? List as many as you can on your whiteboard. Share with your face partner. Discuss as a class.

What operation is this problem? How did you come to that conclusion? I have a PS3 and have 12 games next to the machine. If I had 20 games total then how many am I missing? What operation is this problem? How did you come to that conclusion?

Mathematical reasoning: Vocabulary Mathematical reasoning: Thinking through math problems logically in order to arrive at solutions. A function involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division to solve a problem such as finding what X is. Algebraic function:

Order of Operations Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally! Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

. . Mathematical Symbols 30÷5 or 30/5 Division: ÷ / Multiplication: x ( ) . 4x3 or 4(3) or 4 3 Division: ÷ / 30÷5 or 30/5

Let’s try a few using PEMDAS! 2(3) + 4(7) = 2(3+2) = 30/5 - 4(1) =

Now on your own... (3+11) + (34-16) = 32 7(8) - 54 = 2 144/12 + 15 = Don’t forget PEMDAS! (3+11) + (34-16) = 7(8) - 54 = 144/12 + 15 = 32 2 27

If...then statements 4 x A = B 4 x 5 = ? If...A = 5 then...B = ?

Try one! If... X = 13 then...Y =? 25 + X = Y 25 + 13 = 38 Y = 38

Function Tables 3+X=Y 5 7 2 6 3 4 If X is 2...then Y is... Y X If I were to continue this table...using mathematical reasoning...what would come next? How did you come to that conclusion?

Let’s try one together! 3X+6=Y Y 9 69 33 X 45 57 13 17 21 Don’t forget PEMDAS! 3X+6=Y X Y 9 33 13 45 17 57 21 69

On your own complete the function table. Don’t forget PEMDAS! (A+3)2=B A B 20 23 26 46 52 58 64 29

Closure What are the rules for computation? (Order of Operations) How do if...then statements help me to complete a function table? Share...in your table groups share your summary. Share...with me!
