How do I create an outline? Creating an Outline How do I create an outline?

What is an Outline? A list of the main information that you want to include in your project or paper Where each piece information will go What order the information will be presented When you start writing your paper or constructing your project, your skeleton has already been made

How do I begin? Begin with the thesis statement of your project What are going to be the major supporting details for your thesis statement? What are the facts that you will be using for your supporting details? (Your notecards will help with this item)

Creating the Outline Title the outline Write your thesis statement: this will help you keep your focus as you are writing your outline Start with the Introduction (this will be Roman numeral “I”) The next Roman numeral should be your first supporting detail

Example Title: The Battle of Gettysburg – The Battle That Turned the Tide of the War Thesis Statement: The battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point of the Civil War. It turned the tide of the war from the South to the North, pushing back Lee's army that would never fight again on Northern soil and bringing confidence to the Union army.

Example (cont.) Introduction if it is a historical paper State of the Civil War before the battle of Gettysburg Battles of the Civil War before the battle of Gettysburg List of the battles Who “won” each battle Casualty counts of the battles

Example (cont.) Territory controlled before the battle of Gettysburg Territory controlled by the Union Territory controlled by the Confederacy Transportation corridors Control of the Mississippi River Control of the railroad lines

Example (cont.) The battle of Gettysburg Where and when did the battle of Gettysburg occur? Why did the battle of Gettysburg occur? What were the immediate results of the battle? How many soldiers died? For the Union? For the Confederacy? Who “won” the battle of Gettysburg? After the battle of Gettysburg …continue the outline from here
