Early Governments The colonist established their own governments based on the English model. The Mayflower Compact is considered the first form of government in the English colonies Massachusetts created the General Court, while Virginia created the House of Burgess.

Important Concepts from the Colonists Roger Williams started Rhode Island Colony with the concept of limited religious tolerance; meaning different Christians Roger Williams also started the concept of “separation of church and state”; meaning that religion should not be involved in people’s government Quakers gave us the concept of “equality”, blacks and women were treated equal in their church.

Development of the Colonies Topic Sentence: The American colonies began to develop their own identity and view towards Britain CM: In the American colonies an individual had more rights, opportunity and involvement in their community. CD: Britain’s colonial policy known as Salutary Neglect enabled the colonials to develop their own political and economic systems CD: Virginia created their own assembly called the House of Burgess for the passing of taxes and colonial laws CD: Colonists held a higher literacy rate then their countrymen in Britain, In New England, Bible reading for children was key. CD: In Mass Bay and other Puritan colonies adult men that belonged to the church and/or owned property could vote

Mercantilism and Trade Mercantilism is the economic relationship between colonies and the founding country. Colonies supplied raw materials and cash crops, while the mother country provided finished goods. Triangular Trade was the special trade route that brought slaves to the New World.

Colonies are Mistreated CM: The American colonies felt that Britain was unfairly limiting their ability and right, as British subjects to grow and govern as a people CD: The Navigation Acts were a series of trade regulations that restricted the American colonies to trade with Britain CD: A series of wars between England and France would end with the French and Indian War. This removed the French as a barrier for settlement and trade into the Ohio River Valley region CD: Proclamation Line of 1763 prevented colonists from settling in the rich farmland of the Ohio and Tennessee valleys CD: The Sugar Act was designed to control colonial smuggling and raise money through tariffs to pay for the war and support troops in the colonies

Colonists Society The Salem Witch Trials were an attempt by the established church to control the growing diversity within Massachusetts Cotton Mather led the push to rid the colonies of these witches. Most accused were only guilty of being women w/o husbands The trials ended with the governor’s wife accused. 25 died and over 150 jailed
