Ch. 5-1 Notes Geography of Africa

Geographic Features 2nd largest continent Niger River- this allowed civilizations to grow in sub-Saharan Africa

Africa’s 4 Regions Sahara- the farthest north. The world’s largest desert. Sahel- divides the desert from wetter areas. It has enough vegetation to support hardy grazing animals. Savannah- or open grass with scattered trees. Grazing animals are common there. Rain forest- densely wooded forest. This area receives a lot of rain and many plants and animals are here.

West Africa’s Resources Crops Gold Salt-very valuable because everyone needed salt to live and to preserve food. Salt and gold were traded equally for each other.
