How the World and Mankind Came To Be Kylah George, Chloe Krisfalusi, Kavya Menon, Chris Smith, & Brendan Willie
Greek Mythology Greek mythology is the body of myths and legends belonging to the ancient Greeks concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins, and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. They were a part of religion in Ancient Greece. Modern scholars refer to and study the myths in an attempt to throw light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece, its civilization, and to gain understanding of the nature of myth-making itself.
Who was involved in the creation of the World? -Zeus: is known as the “Father of the Gods and Men”. Zeus rules over Mount Olympus and is god of the sky & thunder. -Prometheus: is a Titan, and brother of Epimetheus. He was a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals. -Epimetheus: a titan whom in reference to his brother, Prometheus, is known as foolish. -Pandora: was the first woman and each god created her by giving her unique gifts.
The Story Heaven and Earth created the first two creatures whom were monsters: The Titans and The Cyclopes Zeus’ father ate all of his brothers and sisters, and he was at war with him and all the other Titans to get them back (Zeus’ father was a Titan). Zeus created Pandora, the first woman. He created her out of anger towards Prometheus because Prometheus gave a lot of good to men and the other gods did not like this. Prometheus told Epimetheus never to accept anything from Zeus, but he took her anyway. Pandora found a box that she was told not to open, but instead opened it out of curiosity. Upon doing this, the box released all the evil into the world. Zeus and Prometheus together fought the Titans, and eventually Zeus took over. Later, Zeus called on the flood because humans were not respecting the gods due to Prometheus’ assistance towards the humans which brought on a lot of wickedness. Two humans were left after the flood and they became known as stone people. With the help of the Earth, they re-established life out of stones.
Our Concept In order to display this information in a creative way, we came up with the idea to compare these scenes to modern day examples. Greek mythology is now the basis or closely related to books, movies, and all types of entertainment. So through the use of pictures and video clips we are going to exhibit this.
Scene One Heaven and Earth created the first two creatures whom were monsters: The Titans and The Cyclopes Modern Day Heaven and Earth are both constantly depicted as very broad ideas. Heaven especially is represented with serenity, fluffy clouds, and a positive energy. To go along with the monsters, many fantasy movies still use the embodiment of the Titans, such as Clash of the Titans.
Scene Two Zeus’ father ate all of his brothers and sisters, and he was at war with him and all the other Titans to get them back (Zeus’ father was a Titan). Modern Day There are several titles now which involve massive wars between old, Greek enemies such as 300 or Troy. /watch?v=7RQm37K-clg S 1:45 The plot of 300 revolves around King Leonidas, whom leads 300 Spartans into battle against Persian "god-King” Xerxes and his army of more than one million soldiers
Scene Three & Four “The Box” is a semi-recent film which teaches a similar moral that Pandora learned from opening the box when her instinct told her not to do it. Modern Day Zeus created Pandora, the first woman. He created her out of anger towards Prometheus because he gave a lot of good to men and the other gods did not like this. Pandora found a box that she was told not to open, but instead opened it out of curiosity. Upon doing this, the box released all the evil into the world. “The Box” is a story of a couple whom receives a box with a button on top. If they press it, someone in the world that they do not know will die, and they will receive one million dollars. After a series of events, they decide to press the button. Little do they know that the next time someone presses that button, it will be one of them that loses their life. m/watch?v=CFHa- ygkF_M S 0:38
Scene Five Later, Zeus called on the flood because human were not respecting the gods due to Prometheus’ assistance towards the humans which brought on a lot of wickedness. Modern Day A flood occurring in literature or films are often used to symbolize a wipe out to create a new beginning. It almost teaches the people of the story a lesson. The movie “Evan Almighty” is the perfect example. watch?v=PnUvSn9pVaA E 1:25 “Evan Almighty” is a movie about a man whom is in congress and repeatedly tells someone on the board that the dam that has been constructed is not safe, but he does not listen. In turn, Evan is told by God that he should build an Ark. When a flood comes, many people board the ark and it reaches Washington D.C. in front of the Capitol. He sees this board member, and proves to him that he was right. All this causes a fresh start and perspective.
Scene Six Two humans were left after the flood, and they became known as stone people. With the help of the Earth, they re- established life out of stones. Modern Day Many pieces of literature entail the idea of a new beginning once a fatal event strikes their world. “I am Legend” tells a story of how people must re-create the world, slowly but surely. watch?v=59g5_JHwkaA S 3: 15 “I am Legend” portrays the story of a deadly disease that strikes the entire human population. Three survivors meet, one of them being a doctor trying to find the cure. After he gives his life to defend his cure, the remaining two survivors travel to a location which houses a group of people whom have too survived. This group of people together re- establish the world.
The End After learning about the Greek story of how the world came to be, it is interesting to see who scenes from the story so closely resemble the basis for literature and films.
