LQ Winding and Curing Tooling Internal Review F. Nobrega, N. Andreev April 9, 2007

TQ Winding and Curing Experience TQ coil manufacturing has been very successful to date. LBNL and FNAL have collaborated on their completion, with technicians from both labs present throughout the fabrication process. 4 practice coils, 4 coils for TQS01 and 2 coils for TQC01 have been wound and cured. Of these 10 coils, 8 have been reacted and 6 impregnated. The final two TQC01 coils and two spare coils for the initial quadrupoles will be competed soon. Complete coil fabrication procedures (travelers) are written and incorporated into the fabrication process. LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev From Director’s Review 1/06, R. Bossert

LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev TQ coil package LQ coil package design Requirements for first test: 1.dewar volume to accommodate magnet amp power supply with extraction circuit 3.Magnetic Measurement- ready 4.Superfluid-ready preferred This review is for the LQ winding and curing tooling. It also includes a review of the coil end parts. Successful completion of this review will mark the beginning of detailed part drawings to be made from the completed solid model. The tooling design addresses concerns about possible misalignment of the inner and outer coils during fabrication. Although misalignment has not been confirmed at this time, alignment features have been incorporated nonetheless. Alignment using shoulder bolts can be maintained throughout the coil winding and curing fabrication process.

Requirements for first test: 1.dewar volume to accommodate magnet amp power supply with extraction circuit 3.Magnetic Measurement- ready 4.Superfluid-ready preferred Winding and curing tooling for LARP’s long quadrupole (LQ) is based on TQ tooling which uses some of the LHC IR Quad’s model magnet tooling. The 6 m LHC curing mold will be used for the long quad. LQ coil package design LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev Existing LQ curing cavity from 6 m LHC IR Quad program

Requirements for first test: 1.dewar volume to accommodate magnet amp power supply with extraction circuit 3.Magnetic Measurement- ready 4.Superfluid-ready preferred The LQ coil length is 3.34 m and has a laminated mandrel made of 2” EDM blocks. The mandrel has a tight toleranced longitudinal slot (0.250” +/ ”) used by the two shoulder bolts of each pole piece. LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev

Requirements for first test: 1.dewar volume to accommodate magnet amp power supply with extraction circuit 3.Magnetic Measurement- ready 4.Superfluid-ready preferred Shoulder bolts are used to center the coil poles pieces in the winding mandrel’s longitudinal axis. One of the two alignment features of each pole piece will be slotted hole in the longitudinal direction to accommodate manufacturing tolerances. LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev LQ inner coil package design

Andreev LQ inner & outer coil package design

Requirements for first test: 1.dewar volume to accommodate magnet amp power supply with extraction circuit 3.Magnetic Measurement- ready 4.Superfluid-ready preferred The double layer coil package is shown with features for alignment to the curing cavity. LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev

Requirements for first test: 1.dewar volume to accommodate magnet amp power supply with extraction circuit 3.Magnetic Measurement- ready 4.Superfluid-ready preferred Summary The LQ winding & curing tooling is an iteration of the TQ tooling. The LQ winding and curing tooling is ready to begin detailed drawings from the solid model. Alignment features have been incorporated and allow flexibility in coil fabrication. LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev

LQ End Part Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega Fermilab performs both mechanical and magnetic analysis of coil ends. Mechanical analysis is done with programs developed at Fermilab and refined on the High Field Dipole base program. These programs are then used to create the end part surfaces. Accurate, fast and reasonably priced manufacturing techniques for metal parts (water-jet technique) were developed in the high field base program and are used for the end parts on the TQ models. From Director’s Review 1/06, R. Bossert

Requirements for first test: 1.dewar volume to accommodate magnet amp power supply with extraction circuit 3.Magnetic Measurement- ready 4.Superfluid-ready preferred Summary The LQ end parts are from the TQ design. The TQ end part design is satisfactory for the LQ. LQ Wind/Cure Review April 9, 2007 F. Nobrega, N. Andreev
