EDUCATIONAL LESSONS ON TOLERANCE “TOLERANCE as a Key to Social Integration Into European Dimension for Young Citizens” 2FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave

Different “Educational Lessons on Tolerance” were held in our school not only by the Comenius students, but also by several of our classes during Civics lessons. These were the statements discussed: Should same-sex couples be allowed to marry? Should gay or lesbian couples be allowed to adopt children? Are the Romani people trustworthy? Should they have the same rights as Portuguese citizens? Here are some of our colleagues´ opinions and conclusions. FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave3

4 Should same- sex couples be allowed to marry? Should gay or lesbian couples be allowed to adopt children?

Denying same-sex couples the right to marry is a violation of civil rights because we should all have the same rights regardless of our sexual orientation. FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave5 The only thing that should matter in marriage is love. We must accept others’ choices.

We must have an open- minded view of the world. We must respect other people´s preferences and personalities so that we can all live in a more tolerant society. FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave6 Adoption should be legal for same-sex couples because it's impossible for both members to be biological parents of their own children.

FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave7 If homosexuals/lesbians are allowed to adopt they will contribute to give children, who don´t have a family, a brighter future. In these difficult times we should support all families with love and kindness, no matter their sexual orientation.

FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave8 A parent will always be a parent no matter what sexual orientation he/she has. Just because both are of the same sex, that doesn't mean they will treat children differently. It´s not a same-sex marriage that harms children, but the society's reaction to that marriage and that family.

FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave9 Are the Romani people trustworthy? Should they have the same rights as Portuguese citizens?

Romani can bring new ideas and knowledge to our country and help economy to grow. FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave10 The Romani people should have the same rights as any other EU citizen.

FORAVE - Escola Profissional Tecnológica do Vale do Ave11 Many people are suspicious of the Romani just because prejudice against this people is widespread in our societies. There are good and bad people in every race/nationality, so we shouldn´t discriminate the Romani because some of them may do wrong things.
