Act IV Higgins – Liza can live like a lady, but has not the means to. Says she is attractive, but does not seem interested. Liza feels like a damsel who has been rescued. – Swimmer by a lifeguard? Freddy – right place at right time for Liza. He seems to genuinely love her, but in a creepy way. – Might be a fateful meeting

Act V Higgins – Upset cant keep appointments, but misses [the idea of] Liza. He is genuinely worried about her well-being. Doolittle comes into money. Changes the quality of his life, but is not happy about it. – People keep touching him for money. Higgins had to do with Doolittles new found success. Parallel – Meddles with lives (Liza and Doolittle) Doolittle – Middle class morality – responsible for others. Mo money, mo problems.

Higgins took for granted Elizas understood appreciation. – Men – need to voice appreciation! Mrs. Higgins – Sympathizes with Eliza, but thinks she is inferior. – In STRENGTH! – You cant be strong and sensitive (tender-hearted) at same time. Pickering – generous and honorable – Shows humility to Eliza. Shocked at her assumptions. Liza – Gentility and good manners lie in self- respect. Distances herself from Higgins when she wishes to be called Miss Doolittle

Liza has the tools to elevate herself now, but will she use them consistently? Liza – wants father to say not to forgive Higgins, because Higgins is abusive in his relationship with Liza. Needs to know she can depend on father in the future. Higgins treats ALL people badly, but has not the right to do so. At first Liza needed Higgins to become refined, and is now. Now Higgins cant do without her.

Relationship – Higgins view – mutual improvement – Lizas view – mutual caring Higgins expected/demanded tasks such as slipper fetching. – Claims all Liza is fit for is to work for or marry some wealthy man. – Angry that Freddy will keep Liza out of Higgins life. Higgins expects Liza to come back to him. She wont. Shes independent [enough].
