Arial Bold 28 pts ‘Body text’ on this keyline. Arial 24 pts ‘Heading two’ on this keyline. Arial 26 pts Heading two Arial 26 pts Heading three Arial 20 pts Why did we decide to do this? Getting more and more difficult to manage back end of digitisation process –Directory structure for storing files –Complex File naming, particularly for multipage items –No guarantee of integrity of ‘born digital’ material –Ramp-up to ‘industrial strength digitisation’ slv21 funding required MUCH more storage Improve access to collection materials and increase services for their creative use –Present complex method of ordering high quality copies

Arial Bold 28 pts ‘Body text’ on this keyline. Arial 24 pts ‘Heading two’ on this keyline. Arial 26 pts Heading two Arial 26 pts Heading three Arial 20 pts How do we manage now? Files stored in series of directories named according to collection Within directories, files grouped according to function –tiff (original), jpeg (public), thumbnail, display page, etc. Complex filenames –Works ok for 1:1 bib record:image, –As becomes more complex, file naming becomes very complicated Any change to display page, each instance needs to be individually regenerated –very time consuming Harvesting - Use 3 rd party proprietary (& no longer supported) software –Has to be run manually

/doc/ contains shtml page – has to be regenerated each time change made This is the view jpeg There is no high res tiff for this, but this is not clear to either public or staff

Very complex file naming for objects with structure

Project commenced late 2006 after success of slv21 bid Tender process and contract negotiation EMC Storage solution – 75TB and tape library DigiTool, Ex Libris - Software solution Planning for implementation January: Test system September: Production system slv21 will transform the Library’s service model to one based around digital information and access appropriate to the 21st century, while achieving a sustainable funding base for the future

Dedicated project manager –Using slv21 project management framework + a bit of Prince2 METS librarian 0.6EFT –to develop METS application profile for SLV All other work undertaken in-house –Within existing workloads –No additional staff

Arial Bold 28 pts ‘Body text’ on this keyline. Arial 24 pts ‘Heading two’ on this keyline. Arial 26 pts Heading two Arial 26 pts Heading three Arial 20 pts What will the DOMS provide? A single system for the digital surrogates of collection items available to staff –Replacing the hand-built Network File Structure Improved customisable user interface –thumbnail still in Voyager record –user interface offers better viewing of image –availability of existing high resolution TIFFs (for out of copyright material) –access to MARC per image Easy integration and interfaces for EAD, PDF, JPEG2000 and other formats Links for public download of high resolution images for material known to be without any copyright restrictions

Arial 26 pts Heading two Arial 26 pts Heading three Arial 20 pts Clear copyright communications for users Configuration of the User Interface using XSLT, so that given the same data, it can be made to look different without regenerating every page Ability to harvest EAD records for Primo, so that much more detailed information will be available than in catalogue records Ability to set up multiple OAI harvest for PictureAustralia, OAIster, Google & other search engines much more easily than at present. Much more storage space. What will the DOMS provide?

Additional Storage Component

Unmediated access –EAD; –Access to high resolution images where clear of copyright restrictions Use our stuff where, when & how you want to – just mention our name –Changes to MARC records to clarify this using 540 & 542 tags Digital access to culturally significant collections Increasing staffing capability with skills required for digital environment –better equipped to meet and anticipate user demands

Change the access conditions form of words in existing catalogue records for images Work on the design of the User Interface (UI) –which MARC fields to display & what to call them –how to display link to high resolution image Test loads of multiple records from present location(s), under different conditions Schedule order of migration of metadata and digital files by directory Work through re-designed workflows for objects going directly into DOMS as part of digitisation programme Set up and test OAI harvesting for PictureAustralia etc
