Goals for the ESL Classroom  Support the English Learner (EL) in finding comprehensibility in the school setting both socially and academically.  Support the EL in the process of cultural adaptation to the local school environment.  Support the EL in English language acquisition and the connections needed for success in the academic classrooms.  Support regular academic teachers with methods and modifications needed for the EL to be successful in content classrooms and on required assessments.  Support the EL as s/he moves from significant to minimal English support by removing scaffolding as needed for differentiation. 10/22/20142

TN has adopted World Class Instructional Design Assessment (WIDA) Standards  Used by 34 states and 2 territories  Have research to back standards  2012 Amplified standards correspond to Common Core State Standards(CCSS)  Can be viewed at  Many elements of support through WIDA 10/22/20143

WIDA’s CAN DO philosophy is visible in the company’s research. WIDA’s ongoing research focuses on five main areas of inquiry : 1.alignment, 2.the relationship between academic language proficiency and academic achievement, 3.classroom implementation of standards, 4.teacher development, 5.and policy guidance. 10/22/20144
