New Successes – New Standards for English Learners March 22, 2014 TNTESOL Jan Lanier

TN has adopted World Class Instructional Design Assessment (WIDA) Standards  Used by 34 states and 2 territories  Have research to back standards  2012 Amplified standards correspond to Common Core State Standards(CCSS)  Can be viewed at  Many elements of support through WIDA 10/22/20142

Old Standards  Are focused on English language acquisition  More difficult for teachers to use  Lengthy  Do not correspond to CCSS or NGSS  Have not been revised since /22/20143

New Standards  Are focused on academics  Built around Can-Do Descriptors  Short and concise  Easily blended with CCSS academic and NGSS standards  Correspond to CCSS and NGSS 10/22/20144

WIDA’s CAN DO philosophy is visible in the company’s research. WIDA’s ongoing research focuses on five main areas of inquiry : 1.alignment, 2.the relationship between academic language proficiency and academic achievement, 3.classroom implementation of standards, 4.teacher development, 5.and policy guidance. 10/22/20145
