Intelligent Transportation Systems GDOT ITS Concept of Operations Presentation to ITS GA June 28, 2007

Intelligent Transportation Systems What is a Concept of Operations? A Concept of Operations is a high-level description of what the major system capabilities will be – it attempts to answer the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How for the system in general terms for all participants

Intelligent Transportation Systems What is a Concept of Operations? A Concept of Operations is a high-level description of what the major system capabilities will be – it attempts to answer the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How for the system in general terms for all participants.

Intelligent Transportation Systems Components of the Concept

Intelligent Transportation Systems Why Now? Hasn’t the NaviGAtor system been in place for over 10 years? Yes, but: – No formal Concept of Operations – Changes in the ITS landscape – New services offered – Many unanswered questions

Intelligent Transportation Systems Questions How will the system be expanded? What is the role of GDOT and local agencies? What future services will NaviGAtor support? Will signals be integrated into NaviGAtor? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? We are tasked with answering these questions in the Concept

Intelligent Transportation Systems Systems Engineering Process Completed in 2005 Completed in 2006

Intelligent Transportation Systems Concept Development Process Review Background Materials Steering Committee and Management Interviews Stakeholder Interviews Document Current Concept of Operations Visioning Future Concept of Operations Validation

Intelligent Transportation Systems NaviGAtor System Overview

Intelligent Transportation Systems Results of Stakeholder Interviews Local governments are in the business of operating signals ITS can enhance their ability to operate signals (move traffic on the arterials) Almost all local agencies are pleased with the level of support they get from GDOT in signal operations and maintenance

Intelligent Transportation Systems Results of Stakeholder Interviews Most all local agencies plan to have a traffic control center Most local agencies see a need to staff their TCC, but do not have the resources

Intelligent Transportation Systems Stakeholder Interviews GDOT should set the vision and communicate it to the local agencies GDOT should develop flexible specifications Coordination with the Construction and Bridge Departments is a challenge ITS maintenance is a challenge – would like GDOT’s support

Intelligent Transportation Systems Stakeholder Interviews Most all agencies see the value in a centralized transportation management system which lets GDOT and agencies share data Almost all agencies support the idea of GDOT providing both signal and TCC software NaviGAtor software adds little value to local agencies when compared to the cost and effort to maintain Most all agencies see a need to integrate status and some control aspects of ACTRA into NaviGAtor

Intelligent Transportation Systems So what about the future Concept? New Data Requirements New Operational Requirements New Software Requirements

Intelligent Transportation Systems What are your thoughts?
