Warm-up Week 4 Day 1 1.Natural Systems are usually “open systems.” How are open systems different than “closed systems?” 2.Human actions create ___________ in all other parts of the Earth System. 3.What are the 2 sources of energy for the Earth System? 4.What is a non-renewable resource?

“What is Scientific Inquiry?” Chapter 1, Section 5

All Science is based on 2 beliefs… 1.Natural world interacts in consistent, predictable ways. 2.Understand consistent behavior through careful, systematic study. We can learn what to EXPECT.

Recall: Scientific Method. 1.Question (find a problem) 2.Observation (Research) 3.Hypothesis (guess) 4.Experiment 5.Record and Analyze results 6.Conclude (“this is what we found…”)

Scientists repeat stuff. So differences caused by natural variation become clear.

Hypothesis An Explanation that is tested to determine “validity” (correctness) must be tested and analyzed

Theory. When a Hypothesis survives LOTS of testing others have been eliminated. Theory: 1.Well-tested belief 2.Widely accepted 3.Explains certain observable facts
