WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM? For 16-19 year olds University preparatory Taught over two years Requiring a balance between various subjects Requiring academic rigour, critical inquiry and active learning. Taught in 1,579 schools in 122 countries (November 2005)

WHO CAN BE AN IB STUDENT? Any student who is willing or able to: Communicate fluently in English at grade or higher level Work through an academically rigorous program Plan his/her work carefully ahead of time Cope with stress

A successful IB student must be willing or able to… Think carefully and critically; Have his/her ideas and opinions challenged intellectually; Act responsibly and ethically, with good reasons; Express his/her talents in creativity, action and service to the community.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HL AND SL SUBJECTS? STANDARD LEVEL subjects cover BASIC knowledge and skills required for entry into a first year course at university. HIGHER LEVEL subjects cover MORE topics treated at GREATER depth than SL courses.

THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE TOK is a course designed to encourage critical reflection about knowledge and learning in different disciplines. Students are expected to develop critical thinking skills, and the capacity to justify their opinions. They are encouraged to examine important real-world issues from a variety of perspectives.

EXTENDED ESSAY A research paper of not more than 4,000 words On a topic chosen by the student within a discipline recognised by the IB In a standard format appropriate for academic research writing Under the supervision of a teacher

CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) A set of supervised activities OUTSIDE the classroom chosen by the student enabling the student to come into contact with people from a wider social circle providing an opportunity for the student’s personal growth improving the quality of life within the community

HOW DO I CHOOSE MY SUBJECTS? CHOOSE A SUBJECT FROM EACH OF SIX GROUPS - 3 AT HL, 3 AT SL Group 1 - First language - Turkish Literature Group 2 - Second language - English A2 Group 3 - Turkish Social Studies (SL only) or an Experimental Science Group 4 - Experimental Sciences Group 5 - Mathematics Group 6 - Electives

WHICH MATHEMATICS LEVEL DO I CHOOSE? Choose HIGHER LEVEL if you love mathematics and are deeply interested in it AND want a career in mathematics or in a field where advanced mathematics is essential (e.g., theoretical physics or engineering) AND have a grade of 4.0 or higher in mathematics through Lise 1

WHICH MATHEMATICS LEVEL DO I CHOOSE? Choose MATHEMATICAL METHODS (SL) if you are seeking a career in architecture, banking, business management/consulting, economics, engineering, fashion design, journalism, law, life science research, medicine….OR you are undecided OR you don’t feel very confident with mathematics

CRITERIA FOR ENTRY INTO IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM A minimum GPA of 3.5 in ALL subjects at the end of the year BEFORE the grade raising exams. At least a 4.0 in English OR At least a 4.0 average in Maths and all science subjects

CRITERIA FOR ENTRY INTO IB TRACKS IF YOUR GPA IS 3.0-3.5 Recommendations from your teachers regarding your ability to meet deadlines your ability to work consistently your academic honesty your self-motivation your overall academic performance

CERTIFICATE OPTION Choose up to any THREE IB HL subjects from the SAME track (either TM or FM). Music, ITGS, TSS, Computer Science will only be offered at SL. Be in the same class and do the same work as IB Diploma students in those subjects. No CAS, Extended Essay or TOK

CRITERIA FOR ENTRY INTO CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Min GPA 3.5 overall at the end of the year BEFORE the grade raising exam minimum grade 4.0 in the subjects chosen for certificates. For Business & Management, Economics, ITGS, Computer Science and other subjects not taught before Lise 11 – assessment of essay in English or other type of assessment to be determined by teachers.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER IN MAKING MY DECISION? - 1 The IB diploma is an academically challenging program… But you DON’T have to be a 5 student to do it. But you DO need to plan ahead for submitting work on time… And you DO need to be self-motivated, do much of the work on your own, but with the guidance of the teacher.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER IN MAKING MY DECISION? - 2 Whether in Turkish OR in foreign universities, IB diploma students are much better prepared for university work. Some Turkish universities offer incentives for students completing the IB diploma with a good IB score.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER IN MAKING MY DECISION? - 3 Most IB students entering Turkish universities report doing significantly better than students without the IB… EVEN better than those without the IB diploma who may have obtained a higher ÖSS score. Some students have reported that the IB has helped them to perform well in the ÖSS.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER IN MAKING MY DECISION? - 4 Intensive dershane preparation is helpful for the ÖSS exam, but the IB diploma helps for academic success IN university. Managing your time well is crucial for success in the ÖSS and IB if you are doing both at the same time.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER IN MAKING MY DECISION? - 5 The IB diploma is NOT a passport for entering foreign universities. It’s possible to enter a foreign university WITHOUT the IB diploma. US universities generally offer credits for a subject if it has been part of your IB programme, especially at HL.
