Justification  Alignment of text between left & right margins Center At midpoint between left & right margins Left Lined up on the left margin Right Lined up on the right margin Justify Lined up on the left and the right margins --- similar to a newspaper column.

Tab& Indent  Tab the first line of a paragraph by pressing the [Tab] key. This tab starts the paragraph with the first line a half inch in from the left. Indent has the entire paragraph a half inch in from the left.  Indent the whole paragraph using the menus.

Entering and Inserting Text I attend College Suppose you key a phrase … The Insertion Point is at the end of the characters you keyed. You decide you want to insert some text. You click to place the Insertion Point after the word “attend.” You key the characters “ Delta” … and the word “College” moves over to make room for the inserted text. I attend CollegeI attend Delta College

Correcting Errors Suppose you key a word … … and make an error. You click to place the Insertion Point in front of the character you want to delete. You press the [Delete] key once --- and delete the character to the right of the Insertion Point. DELTTA DELTA

Correcting Errors... Suppose you key a word … … and make another error. You click to place the Insertion Point to the right of the two characters you want to delete. You press the [Backspace] key twice --- and delete the characters to the left of the Insertion Point. DETLA DEADELTA Then you key the replacement characters – the “LT” in this example – and you’re done!

Inserting & Deleting Blank Lines Suppose you are keying a paragraph and get to the end. Pressing the [Enter] key gets you to the beginning of the next line – and pressing it again gets you to the next line (leaving a blank line). Then you can start keying the next paragraph. Moving Text Suppose you are keying some text and want to MOVE something – e.g. the “Three” in this example. DETLA DEA One Three Two Four Select the text you want to MOVE. One Three Two Four Click the Edit Menu and click Cut. The text is removed and placed on the clipboard. One Two Four Click an Insertion Point where you want the text to be – e.g. in front of the “Four” One Two Four Click the Edit Menu and click on Paste. The text flows from the clipboard into your document at the new location. One Two Three Four

Copying Text Suppose you are keying some text and notice that you are about to repeat some text you’ve already keyed – e.g. the three indented lines. Click on the Edit Menu and click on Copy. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. Click an Insertion Point where you want the copied text to be placed. Click the Edit Menu and click on Paste. The text flows in from the clipboard. You’ve saved some time and possible errors!

Spell Check Suppose you key some text… … and spell something wrong (Do you know what’s wrong in the example above?) This line contains a mispelled word. If you click on the Tools Menu and click on “Spelling and Grammar” option, the text in your document is checked against Word’s dictionary. If a word does not match the dictionary, a window pops up showing possibilities. You can click on the suggested spelling to choose a replacement and then click on the [Change] button at the right. The word is replaced by the spelling you selected and Word continues to check the rest of the document. This line contains a misspelled word. Of course, if you meant to key the word in question and think it is OK, then you can click on the [Ignore] button on the right to accept the word as you keyed it.

Saving Documents You have a document on your diskette named A:\Myletter.doc It starts “Dear Joe,” SAVE RAM A: Dear Joe, Myletter.doc Word is in RAM – you click on File - Open – you open A:\Myletter.doc It is now in RAM Dear Joe, You change the document in RAM – it now says “Dear Mary,” Dear Mary, You click on File and click on Save – your new version of the letter replaces the one on disk – you have lost the original. Dear Mary,
