Technology: Change/History:Transfer of Knowledge

Technology-driven age?

Patented in 1867 by William Lincoln

So what’s going on? 1)Deep conceptual changes underway; 2)These conceptual changes are being enabled, accelerated and then influenced in iterative ways by digital technologies; 3)For these reasons, we are re-imagining higher education (in similar ways to new thinking elsewhere in society).

“ It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough. It’s technology married with Liberal Arts, with the Humanities, that yields the results that make our hearts sing.” Steve Jobs,

Innovative businesses and organizations now seek to be customer-focused in the marketplace student-centered in schools user-oriented in service industries partner-driven in collaboration employee-empowered in workplaces citizen-engaged in politics patient-focused in health customer-focused in the marketplace user-oriented in service industries Partner-driven in collaboration employee-empowered in workplaces citizen-engaged in politics patient-focused in health student-centered in schools

13 The social sciences and humanities focus on people… human thought and behaviour in the past and present… with a view toward creating a better future.

14 “Getting to understand people is the most critical business strategy today.” Steve Irvine, Senior Business Leader, Facebook Canada From tech-transfer commercialization to people-centered innovation

Re-imagining Campuses Education: From teaching content to learning content AND competencies = Talent Research: From increasing specialization to specialization AND contextualization = the Research T Innovation: From Technology Transfer to Integrated Innovation (People-Centred)

The emergence of Digital Scholarship Students, professors, research partners and those in the larger society are now being connected formally and informally in efforts to learn about all aspects of the past and present, and to use such learning to help make a better future. In this context, `research data` are now also `learning data` as well as `innovation data.`

“On a scale ranging from extremely interdisciplinary to exclusively disciplinary, how would you characterize your research?” Source: 2008 web survey, SSH faculty, Science-Metrix

“Agatha Christie likely suffered from Alzheimer’s” “Research by U of T professors Ian Lancashire and Graeme Hirst has garnered top spot in the N.Y. Times’ 9th Annual Year in Ideas.”

Defining feature of Big Data = evidence of human thought and behaviour! Web 1.0 Web 2.0 social Web 3.0 user-generated content, internet of people + things, semantic web, etc

32 Is knowledge mobilization logical – yes, complex & logical

The increasingly recognized value of Open Access OA as democratic imperative OA as teaching imperative OA as research imperative OA as financial imperative OA as innovation imperative OA as digital imperative

Policy-Regulatory Objectives for Digital Scholarship: Robust and sustainable ecosystem for: Open access to scholarly communication (journals, books, etc) Open access to research data (in trusted repositories, with meta-data, etc) Open access to digital technologies (including connectivity, computational processing, visualization, etc) Researcher awareness, competency development, etc. Compliance and enforcement

Capitalizing on Big Data: Toward a Policy Framework for Advancing Digital Scholarship in Canada ``the potential of data-intensive research is quickly exceeding our ability to manage and to grow the digital ecosystem required to meet 21st century research needs, and thus contribute to Canada’s social and economic prosperity. To help address this challenge, the Agencies in the consultation document are proposing a collective realignment of funding policies that will help promote excellence in data- management practices in agency-funded projects.``
