On December 6, 1989 a lone gunman entered l’Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal and began a rampage that would last nearly 20 minutes....and still resonates today. 1

He separated the women from the men. He opened fire on the women. Fourteen women died. 2

This act of violence shocked the nation. In 1991 the Government of Canada designated December 6 th as Canada’s annual National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. 3

That same year Jack Layton co-founded the White Ribbon Movement to remember the victims of December 6 th and protest against violence against women. 4

Violence against women remains a serious problem in Canada, from acts of hatred, to culturally based offences, sexual harassment, and domestic abuse. 5

Violence is a leading cause of workplace injuries. Between 2008 and 2012, violence represented an average of 11% of all workplace injury claims, in BC healthcare. 6
