Successes Gains in science proficiency for Grades 5 and 8: Student achievement on the 2009 Grade 5 Science FCAT has increased by 11 percentage points since 2006 and has increased by three percentage points compared to 2008 Student achievement on the 2009 Grade 8 Science FCAT has increased by 9 percentage points since 2006 and has increased by one percentage point compared to 2008

Concerns Grade 11 Student achievement on the 2009 Grade 11 Science FCAT has increased by two percentage points since 2006 and has decreased by one percentage point compared to 2008.

Concerns Less than 50% proficient at all three grade levels in 2009 Grade 5 = 46% proficient Grade 8 = 41% proficient Grade 11 = 37% proficient Grade 5 Six districts scored less than or equal to 30% proficient Grade 8 Eleven districts scored less than or equal to 30% proficient Grade 11 Nineteen districts scored less than or equal to 30% proficient Six of these scored less than 20% proficient

Grade level elementary science courses with grade- specific benchmarks from the NGSSS Middle school and high school course descriptions were revised to reflect the NGSSS

Every year up to 108 recipients of the Presidential Award receive: A citation signed by the President of the United States An opportunity to join a dynamic network of Presidential Awardees A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation A paid trip for two to Washington, D.C. to attend a week-long series of recognition events and professional development sessions

19 Division of Public Schools (PreK -12) Florida Department of Education Changes to the PAEMST Program for 2010 Narrative for the dimensions is reduced to 15 pages Video length changed to 45 minutes or one class period, whichever is shorter Eliminated supplementary video No longer accepting VCR videos Clarified that the video must be related to the narrative; however, the narrative can discuss a more extensive unit than the video demonstrates Scoring criteria is defined in terms of quality rather than specificity
