RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LAND AS INFLUENCED BY EARLY EUROPEANS Unit 3 - Outdoor & Environmental Studies

European Settlement Cook arrived, due to lack of permanent settlements by Aboriginals, a view that no land ownership was present. Declared Terra Nullius and claimed by British 1788 First Fleet arrived with cargo of convicts Australia became a dumping ground for the overflow of prisoners from British jails

Settlers Attitude To Land Originally seen as a jail for punishment - not just by convicts Relationship with the land based on land use in Britain Little or no understanding of how Australian eco-systems worked.

Strong history of individual ownership. Society based on agriculture and permanent settlement. Society class and profit orientated Settlers Attitude To Land (Cont)

Fear based on Australia’s vastness and unfamiliarity Dramatically different to British landscape Need to conquer land to remove fear, nature seen as wild enemy Wilderness seen as a wasteland.

Religion Christian based, ideas coming from the bible. God had control over all living things.

What To Do With the Land Humans have power over all things. Produce children to spread over the world and to bring it under control. Destiny is to subdue the land.
