Do-Now Share your letters with the class. Objective To refresh our understanding of progressive viewpoints To discuss current events Friday, October 17 Agenda Do-Now & HW check Progressive or Not? Activity. Create your own. Debate fact check current event Homework Have a nice weekend!!!

Progressive or not Progressive??? Evaluate the following statements… Would a progressive say this? Would a progressive say this? Why or why not? Why or why not? Would this statement affect municipal reforms, or state reforms? Would this statement affect municipal reforms, or state reforms? How do you know? How do you know?

Progressive or Not? I believe the government should take control of business entirely. Everything from Standard Oil to Textiles, they should enact law and order over all of it. Not! Most progressives did not want full regulation of business, but mainly of essential services like water, gas and electricity.

Progressive or Not? I believe that concerns for welfare and public well-being are best served by private charities. The average citizen is perfectly capable and should take control of his own standard of living. Not! Most progressives believed the government ought to increase responsibility for welfare, or public well- being, by ensuring a minimum standard of living. For instance by enacting unemployment benefits, accident and health insurance, social security for the aging and disabled.

Progressive or Not? I believe we should all use the direct primary procedure! Why should party leaders have all the say in selection of nominees for the candidacy?! Progressive! Most progressives believed that more power should rest with the people themselves than with the government. Direct primaries were a departure from the party power politics of the past.

Progressive or Not? I believe that our government should work to dislodge monopolies on utilities. Its not fair when we have no choice over how much we pay in our daily living expenses! Progressive! Most progressives wanted municipal government to dis-empower the monopolies on gas, electricity and water. What do we have to day which parallels this situation?

Progressive or Not? I believe that the power to reject a law passed by the legislature and the power to remove a public official from office should rest with the courts. This is far too much responsibility to give the average citizen. Not! Most progressives believed in referendum and recall. This was a big change in the power of the people, leading to increased democratization of the American government!

Progressive or Not? I believe that workplace hazards should be closely regulated by the government. Employers cannot be trusted to keep their workers safe or to make decisions with their interests at heart, instead of their profits. Progressive! Most progressives were inspired to create and support tombstone legislations by events like the Triangle shirtwaist factory fire. This was a new idea, formerly thought to be none of the governments business!

Progressive or Not? I believe… Now write your own Progressive? Not? Challenge the class and let them decide.
