Introduction Most historians agree that, at best, 50% of people living in colonial America supported the Patriots (colonists who wanted independence from England) during the American War for Independence; Some historians believe that a more accurate breakdown was the following: 33 % supported the Patriots, 33% supported the Tories (colonists who did not want independence from England), and 33 % was neutral. This is sometimes hard for us to believe today! There were many issues for Americans to consider when contemplating which side to support or whether to remain neutral.
