WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH Federal Work Study (FWS) JOBS? Presented by: Center for Career Services, Student Employment
WHAT IS FWS? Federal work study is one type of federal financial aid. The Office of Student Financial Assistance decides if you’re eligible for federal work study. You’re given the opportunity to get a part-time job (“FWS job”) and earn extra money – if you want. If you don’t work; you don’t earn your FWS award

HOW DO I FIND A FWS JOB? 1. View jobs online through GWork You will gain access to GWork in early August. 2. Attend FWS Job Fair on August 28th Held on the 3 rd floor of Marvin Center 3. Contact on-campus departments You decide where you want to apply You follow employer’s application instructions You interview with employers Center for Career Services gives you the tools!
WHERE CAN I WORK? ON CAMPUS: any hiring department OFF-CAMPUS: selected non profit/government organizations around DC Metro area. OFF-CAMPUS: as a literacy tutor at selected sites through GW’s CCEPS
HOW ARE FWS STUDENTS HIRED? FWS Program Runs From August 25 th -April 26 th To be employed by GW you MUST complete the following: I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification: required by federal law. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED Federal + local tax forms: call home! Direct Deposit forms You must report your hours to get paid!
HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU WORK? You & your employer decide work schedule Take into consideration your class schedule Consider your FWS award amount Remember your goal is to make your FWS award last the entire academic year. Most freshmen work 8-10 hours per week
FWS Earnings Employer sets hourly wage. You can earn up to – but not over – the amount of your FWS award. o Use up FWS funds = stop FWS job. FWS students are paid on a bi-weekly basis. Money will come directly to you. FWS earnings are your income; how you choose to spend your money is up to you. o FWS checks DO NOT cover a remaining tuition balance.
