Books of the Law Called The Pentateuch – penta means five – Moses is the author God's rules, how they were broken, and the story of their temporary solution. 1. Genesis 2. Exodus 3. Leviticus 4. Numbers 5. Deuteronomy

Books of History The Story of the nation of Israel. Written by several authors. 1. Joshua 2. Judges 3. Ruth 4. 1Samuel 5. 2 Samuel 6. 1 Kings 7. 2 Kings 8. 1 Chronicles 9. 2 Chronicles 10. Ezra 11. Nehemiah 12. Esther

Numbers The 40 Years Contains the census of Israel Contains the story of the 40 years in the desert -Israel reaches the promised land - Only Joshua and Caleb bring back a good report - Israel must wander as a punishment Deuteronomy "Second Law" Moses gives his final speeches and reviews the laws Moses Dies Joshua is chosen to lead the Israelites into the promised land

Joshua Conquest of the Promised Land God gives Israel the promised land A record of the formation of the army A record of the battles - Jericho falls Judges "God's Rulers" God appoints Judges to oversee Israel and to solve any problems Israel begins to decline into sin and starts to turn away from the laws of God - Most of the Judges were weak Notable Judges- Deborah, Gideon, Samson...12 total judges in this book

Ruth Story of Love Written to show the Israelites that true love sometimes requires uncomprimising sacrifice God will bless those that live obediant lives. God forshadows a redeemer- Ruth's sacrifice leads her to her redeemer Boaz Ruth became David's great-grandmother I Samuel Israel Chooses a King Samuel rises up as the last judge of Israel- He followed God The people demand a king (what God does not want) and God tells Samuel to annoint Saul Saul starts out well, but eventually diobeys God. God becomes angry with Saul and has Samuel annoint David as the next king, ending Saul's line.
