Wheelchair users have highly individualized functional needs for their garments. Anthropometric requirements and usability & materials design criteria are to be considered. A configurator has been developed providing technological solutions to all the functional requirements of the paraplegic and quadriplegic wheelchair users. The adequate contents of the configurator enables these consumers to design personalized, fashionable, comfortable, healthy and save garments. Examples: hydrophylic/hydrophobic finishing, low/high friction, anti bacteria, repelling bad smell, high breathability and low/high thermal isolation. - Elbow and forearm pads from 3D spacer material are available. They protect the wheelchair user from friction and pressure. A contrasting print makes the shirt more fashionable. Elbow leather and back spacers provide extra protection. The front- side seam opening on the right side of the shirt allows for ease in dressing the shirt, starting at the side seam at the hem, running up the sleeve and the arm hole, ending just above the cuff. Undressing is done with the same ease in reverse order. In case caregivers (un)dress the shirt a back opening is an alternative to the front-side opening. - As tetraplegics usually have little feeling in their fingers, closures that they can easily handle are preferred: buttons are replaced by Velcro, tape, zips or snap buttons. So disabled consumers can look as fashionable as people without a handicap. - Because of the great variety of anthropometric requirements it is necessary to determine the complete sizing chart (8 upper body measures) with a measurement tape.
