Emergency intervention in West Bekaa

AVSI profile AVSI Foundation– The Association of Volunteers in International Service. AVSI promotes cultural, social and economic development, especially among the most disadvantaged in developing nations and countries in transition. AVSI carries out its mission through the planning and implementation of medium and long-term sustainable projects and emergency relief operations in partnership with local associations, institutions, international agencies and governments. At present, AVSI is directly involved in 40 countries of the world. AVSI is in Lebanon since 1996.

Emergency intervention in West Bekaa Field of intervention: The project intervene in the economic activities sector aiming at contribute in recuperate and ameliorate the rural economy in the project area.

Emergency intervention in West Bekaa General Objective Contribution to the population return in the villages abandoned to restore the settlements improving the economic conditions of the population in the South West Bekaa territories.

Improvement of Irrigation Water Management in Lebanon and Jordan

General Objective Contribute to improve the to improve the income of farmers by reducing irrigation water losses

Specific objectives   Rehabilitate a part of the Litani River banks   protecting the surrounding lands   Make more agricultural lands cultivable   Increase irrigation efficiency in the two   targeted areas in Lebanon and Jordan   Raise awareness on water management   Improve farmers’ technical know-how   Strengthen regional cooperation on agricultural   water issues

Project Activities 2007/08  Rehabilitating part of the Litani river banks and cleaning its course at 5 critical points  Strengthening Local partner i.e Litani River Authority LRA through:  Activation of the Extension Center for LRA  Complete equipment and activation of the established soil, water and plant laboratories and training of LRA lab technicians  Collection of data from highly modernized weather station  Planning, equipment and running the center demonstration plot  train LRA technical personnel on matters related to water and crop management  Train farmers on topics related to water and crop management  Technically assist and advise farmers during their farming season  Organizing and supporting regional workshops and conferences on water issues on water issues  4 Publications related to river maintenance and rehabilitation, irrigation efficiency and technical materials.  Surveys and studies related to the flooding impact, fertilization practices, irrigation systems problems at farm level
