Presentation transcript:

Eliphalet Remington was born in 1793 in Suffield, CT. He was a blacksmith. He manufactured guns and riffles. He was the owner of E. Remington & Sons Arms Co. that manufactured The Sholes and Glidden Type Writer. To offset the decline in weapon sales after the Civil War ( ), the company had decided to diversify into farm equipment and sewing machines. Hence, why the typewriter looked like a sewing machine.

Today E. Remington & Sons Co. is still around and is known now as Remington Arms Company, Inc. It is now headquartered in Madison, NC. It was founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington in Ilion, New York, as E. Remington and Sons. It is the oldest company in the United States which still makes its original product, and is the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America. It is the only U.S. company which produces both firearms and ammunition domestically, and is the largest U.S. producer of shotguns and rifles.

This was the first version of The Sholes and Glidden Type Writer also known as Remington No. 1. It was manufactured by E. Remington & Sons Arms Co. who as mentioned previously, manufactured sewing machines. When Remington agreed to manufacture Sholes invention, its engineers applied their sewing machines experience to the typewriter. Because of this, the first typewriter ended up looking like a sewing machine, mounted on a table with wrought iron legs. And, as a sewing machine, it required the operator to use hands and feet, hands for the keys and feet for the carriage return. The Sholes and Glidden could print only upper-case letters an issue remedied in its successor, the Remington No. 2and was a "blind writer", meaning the typist could not see what was being written as it was entered.

The Remington No. 2 Type Writer was introduced in 1878, the first typewriter to type both upper & lower case. This was part of second-generation of typewriter products produced by Remington.

Frank Edward McGurrin (April 2, 1861 – August 17, 1933) invented touch typing in He was a court stenographer at Salt Lake City who taught typing classes. He taught himself to touch type without looking at the keys, before challenging and winning a competition.

Christopher Latham Sholes ( ) was an American newspaper editor, politician, and the inventor of the first commercially successful typewriter.

After participating in the Pennsylvania oil boom of the 1860sand patenting the first railroad tank car for the shipment of oilJames Densmore bought a quarter share Sholes' new type writing machine, secured patents, tested models, briefly manufactured the machines in Milwaukee, and in 1873 negotiated the contract with E. Remington and Sons which manufactured the first successful typewriters. For years Densmore poured his money and his energies into the development of the typewriter. James Densmore Amos Densmore

When Sholes built his first model in 1868, the keys were arranged alphabetically in two rows. This resulted in commonly used letters being near each other. This caused the little typewriter type bars to jam. Sholes then decided to space out the letters, separating the commonly used letters to stop the jamming of the machine. This is the first QWERTY layout.

The Dvorak keyboard is a keyboard layout patented in 1936 by Dr. August Dvorak. The Dvorak layout uses less finger motion, increases typing rate, and reduces errors compared to the standard QWERTY keyboard. Although the Dvorak layout has failed to displace the QWERTY keyboard, it has become easier to access in the computer age, being included with all major operating systems in addition to the standard QWERTY layout. Most major operating systems have the option of toggling to the Dvorak layout. If you decide that you would like to switch your computer over to DVORAK it is actually a very easy thing to do. Heres how it can be done: (1) Click on the Start button (2) Click on Settings/Control Panel (3) Double click on Keyboard (4) Click on the Language Tab and then click on Properties (5) In the drop-down list, choose United States – Dvorak (6) Click OK

The world's first typist was Lillian Sholes from Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Christopher Sholes, the man who invented the first practical typewriter.

Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, is said to be the first author to submit a typed manuscript to his publisher. He didnt type it himself though. The novel had Been Life on the Mississippi (1883), although some sources claim it was Tom Sawyer. Twain was one of the first to purchase a Sholes & Glidden typewriter. He fiddled around with it before putting it aside. He was not much of a fan.

I am trying to get the hang of this new fangled writing machine, but I am not making a shining success of it. However, this is the first attempt I ever have made, and yet I perceive that I shall soon & easily acquire a fine facility in its use…One chiefly needs swiftness in banging the keys… (Mark Twains first typewritten letter. December 9, 1874)
