Grammar Reference: Comparison of Adjectives Upgrade 1 - Unit 8 Grammar Reference: Comparison of Adjectives Ao apresentar a lâmina inicial, faça algumas comparações dentro da sala de aula – faça referências ao ambiente em que você está inserido(a) e às pessoas que estão inseridas nele. Depois, diga aos alunos que eles vão conhecer melhor as regras para fazer comparações em inglês.

Have you seen the Spielberg’s most recent movie? Of course! I loved it! Isn’t it great? It’s OK, but I prefer Brazilian movies. They are much more realistic. Leia os balões com os alunos. Invente nomes para as garotas e explore as falas delas para mostrar expressões prontas como “It’s OK”, “Of course”, “You’re right”. Chame a atenção para o que está em negrito e dê outros exemplos a partir desses. You’re right! Brazilian movies are the best nowadays.

Adjectives can be used in the COMPARATIVE and SUPERLATIVE forms. They are used to compare two or more things. In general, comparatives are formed with the particle –er and superlative with –est. Leia as explicações com os alunos, tirando dúvidas de vocabulário, se necessário.

We use the COMPARATIVE to compare two things. In general, in order to form the comparative, we must add the particle –er to the adjectives. e.g. Titanic is longer than Star Wars. Brazil is bigger than Argentina. We use the COMPARATIVE to compare two things. Leia as informações com os alunos e peça a eles que deem mais exemplos com base nas duas frases dadas. Dê dicas: comece as frases e eles terminam, ou dê exemplos de duas coisas/pessoas e peça a eles que façam a comparação.

Have you watched these movies?? Titanic is sadder than The Notebook. Shrek is funnier and more interesting than Robots. Leia os exemplos com os alunos. Estimule a discussão sobre os filmes. Do you agree? Have you watched these movies??

Comparative Rules One syllable, ending in E. Examples: large, cute. Add -r: larger, cuter. Only one syllable, with one vowel and one consonant at the end. Examples: thin, big, fat. Double the consonant, and add -er: Thinner, bigger, fatter. Two syllables, ending in Y. Examples: happy, lovely, lonely Change y to i, then add -er: happier, lovelier, lonelier. Two syllables or more, not ending in Y. Examples: interesting, intelligent, beautiful Use “more” before the adjective: more interesting, more intelligent, more beautiful. Com base nas regras de formação do grau comparativo, peça aos alunos exemplos de adjetivos para que as regras sejam aplicadas. Liste as palavras na lousa.

Superlative In general, in order to form the superlative, we must add the particle -est to the adjectives. e.g. Titanic is the longest movie I’ve ever watched. Brazil is the biggest country in South America. We use the SUPERLATIVE to compare more than two things. Leia as informações com os alunos e peça a eles que deem mais exemplos com base nas frases dadas. Dê dicas: comece as frases e eles terminam, ou dê exemplos de duas coisas/pessoas e peça a eles para fazer a comparação com o grau superlativo. Se necessário, indique os adjetivos, também.

Do you agree? Can you list others? Lord of the Rings is one of the most famous trilogies! Do you agree? Avatar is one of the most awarded movies! Leia os exemplos com os alunos. Estimule a discussão sobre os filmes. Can you list others?

Superlative Rules !!! One syllable, ending in E. Examples: large, cute. Add -st: largest, cutest. Only one syllable, with one vowel and one consonant at the end. Examples: thin, big, fat. Double the consonant, and add -est: Thinnest, biggest, fattest. Two syllables, ending in Y. Examples: happy, lovely, lonely. Change y to i, then add -est: happiest, loveliest, loneliest. Two syllables or more, not ending in Y. Examples: interesting, intelligent, beautiful. Use “most” before the adjective: most interesting, most intelligent, most beautiful. Com base nas regras de formação do grau comparativo, peça aos alunos exemplos de adjetivos para que as regras sejam aplicadas. Liste as palavras na lousa. !!! Remember that in superlative we need to use “the” before the adjective. For example: the biggest, the largest.

Irregular Adjectives Titanic is better than Star Wars. COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE GOOD BETTER THE BEST BAD WORSE THE WORST FAR FARTHER FURTHER THE FARTHEST THE FURTHEST Titanic is better than Star Wars. Titanic is the best film of the decade. Chame a atenção dos alunos para os casos de adjetivos irregulares. Expanda os exemplos com a ajuda deles. Let’s create some more examples?

And you? What’s the best movie you’ve ever watched? Choose two movies and compare them using the comparative form. Finalize a apresentação propondo as perguntas/tarefas. Crie mais perguntas com base nos exemplos dados e peça aos alunos para criarem também. Proponha um jogo em duas equipes: um time propõe uma situação e o outro tem que formar a frase empregando as regras corretamente. Você, professor(a), vai ser o(a) juiz(juíza) da tarefa. Choose one movie and compare it using the superlative form.
