(use and form)

 We use it to compare people or things. Usa-se para comparar pessoas ou coisas. e.g. – That t-shirt is cheaper than this one.

Comparative of superiority/ inferiority  One-syllable adjectives usually have er ending. Acrescenta-se er aos adjectivos de uma sílaba. e.g. – John is taller than Sue.  One-syllable adjectives with spelling consonant + single vowel + consonant double the final consonant. Adjectivos de uma sílaba que terminem em consoante + vogal + consoante, dobram a consoante final e.g. – Pants are bigger than shorts.  Some two-syllable adjectives have er and some have more or less. Alguns adjectivos de duas sílabas terminar em –er enquanto que outros permanecem iguais colocando-se more ou less antes do mesmo. e.g. –Your room is narrower than mine. She is more tired than him. / She is less tired than him.

Comparative of superiority/ inferiority (cont.)  Two-syllable adjectives ending in a consonant + y have ier. Os adjectivos de duas sílabas que terminem em consoante + y formam o comparativo com a terminação ier. e.g. – She is happier than him.  Two-syllable adjectives ending in ful or less have more or less. The same happens to adjectives ending in ing or ed. Adjectivos de duas sílabas que terminem em –ful ou –less permanecem iguais colocando-se more ou less antes dos mesmos. O mesmo acontece com os adjectivos que terminam em –ing ou –ed. e.g. - He is more careful than she is. You are less hopeless than she is. She is more boring than me. He was less surprised than him.  We use more or less with three syllable adjectives (or more). Os adjectivos de três sílabas permanecem iguais colocando-se more ou less antes dos mesmos. e.g. - He is more responsible than her. / He is less responsible than her.

Comparative of equality  We use as… as to say that things are equal or unequal. Usa-se “as” antes e depois do adjectivo para dizer que as coisas são iguais ou desiguais. e.g. – I am as good as you at Maths. / I ‘m not as good as you at Maths.

Irregular comparatives  good/ well  better  bad/ badly  worse  much/ many/ a lot  more  little  less  far  further/ farther  old  older/ elder  elder is only used for people in the same family.
