Dr. Elmar Römpczyk Green Communities … Energy - a single issue at stake ? Energy - a single issue at stake ? strategic choices are in progress strategic choices are in progress first DEMAND then SUPPLY first DEMAND then SUPPLY out of the woods, urgently & through networking out of the woods, urgently & through networking

Dr. Elmar Römpczyk Green Communities … Energy - a single issue at stake ? Energy - a single issue at stake ?

In 50 years the demand of 9 bn people for resources and energy cannot be satisfied the same way as was done during the passed 50 years on the northern globe for just 1 bn. The industrial North hostes 25% of global population. This minority consumes but 75% of the yearly global energy. lifestyle Housing / construction Housing / construction Mobility Communication Education Dr. Elmar Römpczyk Participation Yasuní Green Communities – question of lifestyle Need for strategic choices Heating + Power Heating + Power Food / processing Food / processing

(1) reduce the energy demand, and (2) replace the import of energies (65%) by domestic production Latvia has two major long-term strategic decisions to make: (for development & for security) (1) goes together with Efficiency and that in form of cogeneration. In LV you should preserve the local district heating systems for that. Wood & bio-resources can feed local cogeneration (2) goes together with Latvia´s balance of payments prime energies imports from Russia; power from LT, EE do not include all real costs; therefore price increases are ahead Dr. Elmar Römpczyk Green Communities – question of lifestyle By-product: less corruption, less monopolies (Latvenergo, Latvijas Gaze, ….)

Dr. Elmar Römpczyk Green Communities … strategic choices some are in progress strategic choices some are in progress

Energy-policy-dreams in LV but no strategy export of strategic resource dangerous dependency on imports Food or Fuel ? save energy be efficient use decentral CHP save energy be efficient use decentral CHP

Some Goals to be achieved reduce the use of electric energy per inhabitant by at least 20 % by the year 2015 compared to 1993 Cogeneration is possible In 1996, a unanimous decision was taken – Växjö shall be a City free from Fossil Fuel reduce the fossil CO 2 emissions per inhabitant by at least 50 % by the year 2010, and by at least 70 % by the year 2025, compared to 1993 Växjö – message: Dr. Elmar Römpczyk Green Communities – question of lifestyle
