Explosives Where Do They Go

Storage Areas surrounding storage facilities for explosives shall be kept clear of trash, brush, dry grass, and trees under 10 feet. tall; for a distance of 25 in all directions. Combustibles shall not be stored or allowed to accumulate within 50 of explosive material.

Storage Cont… Explosive material shall be as follows: Stored in a manner to facilitate use of oldest stock first. Stored according to brand and grade to facilitate identification. Stacked in a stable manner not over 8 high.

Storage Cont… Detonators and Explosives shall be stored in magazines. Storage facilities for any explosive material shall be: (1) Located so that the forces generated by a storage facility explosion will not create a hazard to occupants in mine buildings, dams, and electric stations.

Storage Cont… Storage facilities for any explosives shall be: (2) Detached structures located outside the blast area and a sufficient distance from power lines so that the power lines, if damaged, would not contact the magazines.

Storage Cont… Magazine requirements shall be: Structurally sound, noncombustible or the exterior covered with fire-resistant material. Bullet resistant, made of non-sparking material on the inside, vented to control dampness and excessive heat, posted with appropriate placard or warning signs.

Magazine Requirements Cont… The warning signs should indicate the contents and be visible from each approach, located so that a bullet passing through any of the signs will not strike the magazine. Kept clean and dry inside. Locked when unattended. Metal magazines shall be electrically bonded.

Transportation Explosive material shall be transported without delay to the storage area or blast site. Detonators shall not be transported on the same vehicle or conveyance with other explosives except under the conditions of CFR 30 reg

Transportation Vehicles containing explosive material shall be: 1. Maintained in good condition and shall comply with the requirements of subpart M of CFR Equipped with sides and enclosures higher than the explo-sive material being transported or have the explosive secured to nonconductive pallet.

Transportation 3. Equipped with a cargo space to contain the explosive material 4. Equipped with at least two multipurpose fire extinguishers 5. Posted with warning signs that indicate the content and are visible from each approach. 6. Occupied only by persons necessary for handling the explosive material.

Instructors Guide Discuss storage and magazine areas located at your facility. Discuss safe transportation procedures if explosives are brought onto the property. Review warning procedures prior to blasting. Review proper response to un-detonated explosives and caps.
